Wine Critic Reviews:

23 years old and yet one of the best wines in the vertical, this has real power and grip, still with a tannic buildup through the palate that's packed full of the Left Bank signatures: menthol, cassis, dark brambled fruits, cedar, cold ash and liquorice. It has great freshness on the nose, and it's still so young and full of beauty. Easily one of the most exciting wines here. Drinking Window 2019 - 2032

Decanter | 97 DEC
Saturated red-ruby color. Complex aromas of raspberry, mulberry, licorice, tar and vanillin oak. Sweet, full and dense; solidly structured yet quite supple. Berry flavors are clear and vibrant, and tannins are ripe and sweet. A very strong showing for a wine that was difficult to taste in the spring of '97.

Rauzan-Segla, which harvested between September 24 and October 4, utilized 58% of the crop in the 1996 blend, which was composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The wines from this estate tend to be extremely backward, and older vintages have the potential to be very long-lived (100+ years). While today's vintages do not have quite that longevity, this is one of the more classic vin de garde terroirs of the region. The 1996 appears to be an outstanding wine, but perhaps slightly below the quality of the fleshier, more forward, intense 1995. The 1996 exhibits an opaque purple color, followed by a restrained, black fruit, earth, and toasty oak-scented nose, medium body, high tannin, and a sense of huge structure as well as outstanding depth. For a 1996, this wine contains one of the highest percentages of Merlot of any Medoc. It possesses 25-30 years of aging potential.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 91 RP
Anther elegant wine from this estate is the 1996 Rauzan-Ségla, based on a 60/40 split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Its medium ruby color is followed by a complex bouquet of cedar spice, menthol, saddle leather, and earth, and it has sweet, mature fruit. Nicely balanced on the palate, with a resolved, elegant texture, it’s certainly drinking at point today yet will keep nicely going forward.

Intense aromas of blackberry, chocolate and currant follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and a long decadent aftertaste. Ready to enjoy.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 8,750 cases made.

The limestone-based earth is rich in calcium, and the almost oceanic climate conditions give the staple Bordeaux grape varietals vigor and flavor like nowhere else. For their illustrious reds, Bordeaux winemakers rely on a proven combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Meanwhile, a sip of their excellent white wine hints at the use of Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varietals carries a unique identity, making every quality wine a character piece to rival Citizen Kane. It can be incredibly hard to choose only a few wines to collect for your cellar!
