Wine Critic Reviews:

The 2015 Solo Único is an unoaked Loureiro (this is Ameal, a specialist and the benchmark Loureiro producer). Sourced from Nogueira in the Lima Valley, where the winery says that Loureiro is at its most aromatic, this comes in at 11.5% alcohol. This is the same wine as last year's Solo, with a slightly different name, but the same minimalist intervention as described in the 2014 tasting note. This brand has come a long way in a hurry. Remarkably pure, this shows fine tension, acidity lifting the fruit and allowing this to finish with lingering flavor, what seems to be the pure essence of fruit. Fresh, clean and penetrating, it is delicious (in its dry and steely way—don't expect sweetness!) and beautifully structured. Loureiro and Ameal always specialize in the most elegant of wines, fresh and clean. This is never going to be a big, fat blockbuster, in other words. If you want a crisp, fresh white, though, with the crispness to pair with shellfish and the elegance to drink on its own, it's hard to do much better. It may well improve by this time next year. It should age well, if it has the same type of aging curve the regular Ameals do. There were just 2,000 bottles produced.

Country Portugal: In many ways, Portuguese wine is the result of various cultural incursions and different traditions being brought to the region. It's a melting pot of ideas and styles, and this is perfectly reflected in the wines themselves. Portugal is home to an incredible number of unique varietals, which makes each wine that much more exciting and irreplicable. Visiting Portugal is one of the most enlightening parts of an individual's life-long wine journey, and some would say the region is still underappreciated. Open your mind to Portugal's wines and expand your horizons. Make sure to save a bottle or two for your friends!

Region Portugal: This gorgeous region has been greatly underestimated in the past. Its natural virtues are now being transformed, enhanced and reinforced as Portugal undergoes a real winemaking revolution. Previously only known for Port, Madeira and the still white Vinho Verde, Portugal now offers a serious milieu of predominantly red, incredibly rich, dry, table wines from Dao and Douro. While the country doesn't have a terroir as diverse as some other regions, it is still vast and nuanced between the sandy, hilly coasts, mountains, and rich river valleys. Lots of rain in this maritime climate irrigates the abundant vintages that have to be protected from illness and rot, which seems to be no problem for Portugal, especially in recent years. The ambiance is perfect for some interesting native grapes that distinguish the region from the rest of the world. If you come across a superb Portuguese wine, read the label and don't see a single familiar word, this is why. Touriga Nacional is perhaps the most used grape in these red wines, featuring exquisite details of leather, delicate florals and spice. Portuguese wines often exhibit fantastic aging potential due to their strong tannic structure. Now is the perfect time to grab a bottle whether you plan to treat yourself immediately or hold for years to come.

Varietal Proprietary Blend: There's a level of mystery and intrigue when it comes to drinking a wine for which you're not fully informed about, and if that sounds like a thrilling idea to you, then you're probably already interested in proprietary blends. While the concept doesn't have a legal definition, it is used to describe blends whose components aren't disclosed by the producer. In many cases, the wine tends to be a Bordeaux-inspired blend, but this isn't always the case.
