The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sage Mountain Vineyard may very well be the single greatest vintage made here thus far. It is quite simply a stunning wine and a towering achievement from the Mondavi family. Powerful, ample and sweeping in stature, the 2016 boasts breathtaking intensity in all of its dimensions. I see the pure, vibrant fruit of the 2013, but with more finessed tannins that add to the wine's feeling of real sensuality. Bright, precise and finely sculpted with remarkable persistence and perfectly integrated tannins, the 2016 is positively stellar - not to mention one of the wines of the vintage.

The 2016 Proprietary Red is blended of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, 18% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it emits an incredible array of seductive floral notes—violets, lavender and rose hip tea—with a core of warm cassis, redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, cigar box, tapenade and crushed rocks plus hints of bay leaves, beef drippings and yeast extract. Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with vivacious black fruit sparked by red fruit, herbal and mineral accents. It is framed with a rock-solid line of firm, grainy, super ripe tannins and finishes with fantastic fragrance and freshness. Wow!

This is a very young, concentrated and tannin-laced wine with great potential for aging, from Tim and Marcia Mondavi's Pritchard Hill winery estate. An almost black color is the first impression, then an aroma of blueberries, blackberries and black currants leads to very ripe black-fruit flavors and oak spices that are thoroughly held in check by the tight texture. Best from 2028–2038.

Iconic vintner Tim Mondavi and his family manage to capture the essence of Pritchard Hill. Their estate features the Sage Mountain Vineyard, a now-mature vineyard providing wisdom and tension in the wine. In 2016, mother nature gifted a great vintage with complexity and concentration to the rather low crop. Signature vineyard notes of zesty citrus and fresh red roses hint at the mineral-driven structure. The flavours are dominated by dark fruits, wild brush and tobacco, and the palate finishes with stern tannins. Drinking Window 2019 - 2030.

Dark and winey, delivering well-steeped currant and blackberry fruit infused with dark earth, tobacco, and graphite notes. The fruit wins out in the end, but the background keeps this grounded. From Napa Valley to the regions south of Los Angeles, there's a red for everyone - and it's never too late to start exploring.
Varietal Proprietary Blend : Proprietary Blend is a general term used to indicate that a wine is comprised of multiple grape varietals which are either “proprietary” to the winery or is blended and does not meet the required maximum or minimum percentage of a particular varietal. This also is the case for the grape’s place of origin, especially for region, appellation or vineyard designated wines. There are endless examples of blended wines which are labeled as “Proprietary Blend” and in conjunction with each region’s stipulated wine laws and regulations makes for a vast blanket for wines to fall into. Perhaps the simplest example is California; if a wine is to be labeled as Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, it is required to have at least 75% of the varietal (Cabernet Sauvignon) and 85% of the fruit must be cultivated from the Napa Valley wine district. If the wine does not meet the requirements, it is then labeled as Proprietary Blend.
