Chardonnay Wines

Chardonnay isn’t just the most popular white wine in the world – it’s angelic. Anyone with a developed taste for fine wine would struggle to maintain composure after tasting some of the stronger vintages of this masterpiece. Aside from France and the United States, you can expect to encounter bottles from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Italy, Chile, and quite a few others. Every region that produces quality Chardonnay tends to add their own spin to it by including a lot of delicious fruits and changing up their techniques. It’s the perfect drink for experimentation, so why not conduct some research yourself?

You can expect your bottle of Chardonnay to include tastes such as sugary banana, a lush and juicy peach that just explodes in your mouth, robust and tropical pineapple (great for fighting off summer heat), the tried-and-true apple that adds some zest to the combination, or citrus combinations to give your drink that extra edge. If you play your cards right, the taste will always be different, and the texture never stays exactly the same, either. As a result, Chardonnay rewards repeat samplings, and that’s exactly what will be on your mind after you get so much as a whiff of this wine. It may go under different names (usually taking the name of a region, like Burgundy), but the experience is authentic and unique, so even inexperienced wine-lovers will realize what it is within a sip or two.

2010 domaine william fevre chablis bougros Burgundy White

A restrained nose of citrus, floral, mineral reduction and algae slides into impressively rich, powerful, serious and concentrated flavors that are almost painfully intense on the explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a classic Bougros with its robust and muscular big-bodied flavors.Burghound | 92-95 BHThe 2010 Bougros was bottled at the same time as the Vaulorent, but it too was showing very, very well at the time of my visit. The simply beautiful bouquet offers up a complex and classy mélange of apple, tart orange, lime, chalky soil tones, spring flowers and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and racy, with great focus and balance, brisk acidity, a rock solid core of fruit and great length and grip on the still very youthful finish. (Drink between 2018 - 2050)John Gilman | 95+ JGWith 10.18 acres, Fèvre owns one-third of this grand cru, a southwest-facing hillside that produced a spherical wine locked in a Kimmeridgian limestone shell. Scents of wildflower honey and creamy Meyer lemon flavors get cut by the blunt youth of the wine’s acidity and soil character. A transmigration of fossilized oyster shells into a chardonnay of today.Wine & Spirits Magazine | 93 W&SThe 2010 Chablis Bougros is terrific in this vintage, even if the slight lack of polish this site confers to the wines is impossible to completely escape. 2018 bernard moreau chassagne montrachet Burgundy White

There are fully 125 barrels of the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a lovely wine in the making that reveals aromas of warm bread, citrus oil, fresh peach and dried white flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and nicely concentrated, with fine cut and a well-defined finish. That there’s so much volume this year is great news for Moreau fans.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 89-91 RP(Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Villages White) Discreet wood influence sets off the ripe aromas of various white-fleshed fruit along with hints of matchstick and lemon rind. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess both good detail and punch, all wrapped in a less refined but notably more complex finale. This is a quality Chassagne villages. (Drink starting 2023).Burghound | 89-91 BH(Chassagne-Montrachet- Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils) The 2018 Chassagne villages here was all ready for bottling and was just settling in for another month or so prior to its mise. The wine had been assembled at the end of July and fined the last week of October, so it was showing very well in mid-November. The nose is pure and very floral this year, offering up a fine blend of pear, apple, a lovely base of soil, lemon blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and succulent at the core, with a zesty girdle of acidity, lovely focus and grip and impressive backend mineral drive on the complex and beautifully balanced finish. 2018 william fevre chablis bougros cote bouguerots Burgundy White

One of three producers in Chablis to bottle wine under this label (or a slight variation of its spelling), this comes from what is generally considered the best bit of Bougros, on a slope close to the River Serein. Picked early in 2018, this is fresher and more refined than it can be in warmer vintages, showing beeswax and citrus perfume, refined oak and lingering freshness. Drinking Window 2020 - 2028.Decanter | 96 DEC(Chablis “Bougros- Côte de Bouguerots”- Domaine William Fèvre) The 2018 Côte de Bouguerots is also superb in this vintage, and is very, very elegant in profile out of the blocks. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a blend of fresh lime, pear, apple, chalky soil tones, apple blossoms and a topnote of beeswax. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with a rock solid core of fruit, laser-like focus and outstanding mineral drive on the long, snappy and complex finish. Stunning juice. (Drink between 2025-2065).John Gilman | 95 JGHazelnut-like smokiness folds itself around lemon notes on this wine's creamy nose. The palate comes in with rounded pear, portraying the juicy ripeness of 2018 but grounding it in layered, yeasty, chalky and smoky depth. Oaky nuttiness adds extra dimension while lemon freshness makes for luminous length. Drink by 2045.Wine Enthusiast | 95 WE(Domaine William Fèvre Chablis - Bougros "Côte Bouguerots" Grand Cru White) A pure essence is comprised by notes of white flowers, citrus, mineral reduction and a gentle application of wood. The racy, intense and equally refined middle weight flavors are super-saline while exhibiting superb length on the balanced, youthfully austere and very dry finale. This will need to add depth over the next few years, but the underlying material appears to be up to the task. This is very classy juice of refinement and understatement. (Drink starting 2026).Burghound | 94 BHLively and steely with plenty of lime, lemon and steely undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied, fruity and reserved at the end. Drink now.James Suckling | 94 JSThe 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots has turned out very well, unwinding in the glass with bright aromas of white flowers, citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit, crushed stones and oyster shell. Medium to full-bodied, deep and tightly wound, it's racy and incisive, with bright acids and a searingly mineral finish. As usual, this is a cuvée that will appeal to Chablis purists.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94 RPThe 2018 Chablis Bougros Côte Bouguerots Grand Cru is definitely Fèvre’s best cuvée this vintage. It has a razor-sharp nose that you might attribute to a cooler growing season, offering scents of green apple and struck flint and subtle peachy notes that remain in the background. The palate displays exquisite balance and a perfect line of acidity. Harmonious and poised, it gently fans out toward the finish, deftly remaining on that liminal point between austerity and flavor. This is an impressive Chablis from one of its most propitious vineyards.Vinous Media | 94 VMThis is round, with breadth to its melon, peach and grapefruit flavors. 2019 joseph drouhin beaune clos des mouches blanc Burgundy White

Exuberant and joyful, this white Beaune is brimming with pineapple, pear, honeysuckle and vanilla. Ripe and concentrated, but not a jot too big. Stunning mineral acidity that turns the finish into a firework display of fruit and terroir colors. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.James Suckling | 96 JSRipe, juicy yellow-plum and pear flavors are calibrated by a fresh mineral undertone in this voluptuous expression of one Burgundy’s most celebrated vineyards. Matured 12 to15 months in 25% new oak, it’s a big, powerful wine adorned in layers of sweet spice, smoke and dill undertones, but held upright by a spine of acidity. The wineneeds some time to meld but should drink at peak from 2025 to 2035 and hold longer still.Wine Enthusiast | 95 WEMingling aromas of citrus zest and pear with hints of white flowers, buttered toast and almonds, Drouhin’s 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine) is medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with lively acids and a gourmand profile, concluding with a saline finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92-94 RPThe 2019 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru, which is a selection from six different tries through the vineyard, has an intense nose, slightly Alsace-like in style thanks to a hint of linseed oil intermingling with yellow plum and orange blossom. The palate is well balanced with a tensile opening. Lovely orange pith and nectarine notes here. Not a voluminous wine, but very focused on the finish. Excellent. Vinous Media | 91-93 VM(Maison Joseph Drouhin Beaune "Clos des Mouches" 1er Cru White) Moderate reduction overshadows the fruit today though there is fine concentration to the surprisingly powerful flavors that don’t possess quite the same finesse though they are even more persistent. This generously proportioned effort has sufficient mid-palate fat to be enjoyable young while offering very good mid-term cellaring potential. (Drink starting 2026)Burghound | 91-93 BHLacy and pure on the nose with aromatic, fresh notes of acacia flowers, sweet peaches, apricots, lemon curd and a tinge of brioche. 2017 domaine fabien coche meursault 1er cru goutte dor Burgundy White

The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d’Or is an elegant, precise wine that was less advanced in its élevage than the Meursault lieux-dits that proceeded it. In spite of the ripe-orange and exotic-fruit character that pours from the glass, there’s nothing superficial about this wine. There is fine volume to the delicious and almost creamy larger-scaled flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality on the lemon-tinged and youthfully austere finale. This compact and serious effort should definitely benefit from mid-term or perhaps even a decade of cellaring. (Drink starting 2027)Burghound | 93 BHBichot has 1.2ha in Languettes, high on the slope, with a south/south-east exposition. The southern exposition is of major importance here, if one is to avoid over-ripeness. 2020 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot

The 2020 Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru is quite backward on the nose, unfolding to display touches of cold wet limestone and shucked oysters, yet always discreet; this a Grand Cru that does not want to brag. The palate is well balanced with a tangy, quite concentrated entry, fine weight, and good density toward the finish, even if I am not convinced that it will become Droin’s most complex 2020 in the end. We’ll see.Vinous Media | 92-94 VMAn overtly floral nose is comprised by vaguely exotic aromas of lychee, citrus blossom, iodine and ocean breeze. Quite strict on the mineral-driven finish. Good potential, but it will need time.Vinous Media | 91-93 VMThis lemon- and green apple–infused white stays lean, racy and long, combining power and intensity. On the austere side today, with a mineral underpinning and chalky finish. Best from 2025 through 2038.Wine Spectator | 93 WS

2021 Jean Paul & Benoit Droin Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

The 2021 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru offers more intensity and precision than the Vaudésir, the wood giving weight but beautifully assimilated, shucked oyster shells emerging. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening, notes of lemon curd and orange pith, building nicely in the mouth towards a suave and lightly spiced finish. Superb.Vinous Media | 92-94 VMOnce again moderate wood is present on the spicy aromas of green fruit and oyster shell-inflected nose. The rich, powerful and broad-shouldered flavors possess a borderline creamy mid-palate texture while exhibiting outstanding length on the sappy and saline finish. Very promising.Burghound | 92-94 BHFrom a site of just over 1ha, Valmur is a colder site giving, as Dron says, a more masculine. Cool, closed on the nose, this will need a lot of time to open up. Oak is a little more apparent here, with very precise acidity. Very linear at the minute, a grand cru with a nose of white flowers, and a palate of great purity. This will need three to four years to open and will be hitting its stride in seven to eight.Decanter | 93 DEC

2021 Domaine Fernand et Laurent Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champgains

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Champgains unwinds in the glass with notes of pear, toasted nuts, honeycomb and light reduction, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that’s attractively textural and enveloping.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 91 RPModerate reduction once again masks everything but citrus hints. On the palate there is excellent richness and concentration to the very generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that are at once succulent but punchy, all wrapped in a lingering, dry and balanced finale. This could also use better depth but more should reasonable develop if given a chance. I would also note that this is already sufficiently pliant that it could be approached after only 3 to 4 years if desired.Burghound | 91 BH

2021 Domaine Fernand et Laurent Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Blanc

Once again there is a coolness to the pure and pretty aromas of various white orchard fruit, floral and subtle lemon zest wisps. There is excellent density to the rich and powerful medium weight plus flavors that conclude in a bone-dry, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. Like several wines in the range, this will need to develop better depth to merit my rating but that should reasonably occur in time.Burghound | 92 BHThe 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot reveals aromas of pear, white flowers, freshly baked bread and beeswax, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy palate that’s vibrant and layered. This year, it includes Les Fairendes, which is sometimes bottled separately.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 91 RP

2020 Louis Latour Meursault Blagny Premier Cru Chateau de Blagny

Here’s a very typical Meursault that combines the generosity and textural complexity we expect from this appellation, with liveliness that makes it very satisfying. Good concentration. A ton of flinty character at the substantial finish. Drink or hold.James Suckling | 93 JSLuscious and well-delineated, too, this white offers lemon oil, sliced apple and clove flavors, with an underlying mineral element. Long and will benefit from an additional year in bottle. Best from 2023 through 2029. 2,500 cases made, 750 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 92 WSSmoky reduction dominates the underlying fruit today. By contrast, there is good freshness and verve to the notably rich, round and rather plump medium-bodied flavors that display reasonably good length if only average depth on the bitter lemon-inflected and youthfully austere finale.Burghound | 89-91 BHThe 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Château de Blagny offers up aromas of crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, green apple and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, round and rich, it’s a gourmand, textural white from this higher-altitude site.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 90 RP
