A slight hint of reduction does not materially detract from the intensely floral-suffused nose that displays hints of acacia blossom and rose petal along with spice, citrus and pear aromas. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the mouth coating and borderline opulent big-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture on the strikingly persistent and overtly powerful finish. A definite 'wow' wine.

The 2016 Batard Montrachet Grand Cru was vinified together rather than in four different parcels due to the frost (in fact one plot was pulled out). It has a much more involving and expressive bouquet compared to the Bienvenues. The palate is slightly viscous on the entry countered by a keen thread of acidity, not as tensile as the Bienvenues but surprisingly richer than one would have expected, with traces of wild honey toward the caressing finish. This may well turn out to be the pick of Leflaive's 2016s.

This is broad and lush in texture, evoking peach, lemon cream, hazelnut and baking spice flavors. Harmonious enough to enjoy now, yet should develop well over the next decade. Really long, tangy finish. Drink now through 2028. 185 cases made, 26 cases imported.

The Bâtard is more reserved than the Bienvenues, opening with aeration to reveal notes of preserved lemon, orange zest, yellow orchard fruit and crème pâtissière. The wine is full-bodied and glossy, weightier than the Bienvenues, with a muscular, soil-driven personality. This still feels quite primary and, like the Pucelles, it will need bottle age to reveal all its potential. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040

(Bâtard-Montrachet- Domaine Leflaive) The frost damage in the Bâtard this year was similar to that in Bienvenues, and the wine is equally classic in profile and potential. The 2016 Bâtard-Montrachet offers up a fine, quite youthful and very precise nose of apple, lemon oil, chalky minerality, fresh almond and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, crisp and full-bodied, with a rock solid core, excellent transparency, bright, zesty acids and a very long, nascently complex and energetic finish. This is very adolescent today, but its promise is manifest. (Drink between 2025-2060)

(all of the fruit in 2016 came from the Puligny side of the appellation, as one of Leflaive's parcels on the Chassagne side has been pulled up for replanting and another produced no fruit following the frost): Bright, pale yellow. Fresh yellow fruits and mirabelle are accented by a floral note. At once creamy and delineated on the palate, showing noteworthy cut and floral lift, not to mention brisk acidity. Perhaps not as powerful as the 2017 version, and in need of patience to reveal its inherent personality, this very promising Bâtard needs time.
