2014 g d vajra barolo bricco delle viole Barolo

The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is positively stunning. There are many things about this wine that are super-impressive, but what stands out most is how soft and silky the tannins are. Because of that, the 2014 is much more approachable than it usually is, and yet also conveys the feeling of translucence that is such a signature of this site and wine. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Bricco delle Viole with this much purity of fruit. The 2014 is total class. Don’t miss it.Vinous Media | 96 VMThe Vajra family’s plots in this cru—one of the highest in the Barolo commune—are usually the last they harvest, and were especially so in the cool 2014 vintage. The wait was worth it, resulting in a ripe, vibrant Barolo, its berry flavors infused with brilliant, mouthwatering acidity. Velvety tannins frame the fruit, leaving room for notes of licorice and mint to emerge.Wine & Spirits Magazine | 95 W&S50 days of maceration and 30 months in large barrels sculpt a floral, sapid and caressing Barolo of rare nobility. Full, with round tannins. A rich, refreshing style with huge drinkability – and ready now.Decanter | 94 DECHere is a delicate, graceful and deeply floral expression of Nebbiolo. The 2014 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole offers a very polished and fine interpretation with a ready and accessible personality. This is a great wine to order at your favorite restaurant. This vintage is well suited to near and medium-term drinking. The wine sees a long 50-day maceration period, and uniquely designed conical stainless steel vessels are used during fermentation. This is innovative technology meant to mimic traditional winemaking machinery. The 2014 vintage is a bit thinner and more compact in terms of mouthfeel, but the bouquet is bright and vibrant nonetheless. This is a more approachable interpretation of one of Barolo’s most elegant and delicate wines.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92+ RPPure cherry and plum flavors herald this rich, succulent red. Along with supporting notes of wild herb, underbrush and iron, this also carries some serious tannic clout. Finishes just on the edge of ripeness. 2016 damilano barolo cannubi riserva 1752 Italy Red

This is a phenomenal Barolo from a benchmark vintage. It’s so powerful and structured with toned and muscular tannins that run the length of the wine. Classic structure. Full-bodied but tight and intense. Flavors of forest floor, fresh mushroom, truffle, and cedar. Dried flowers, too. It goes on for minutes. This needs at least eight years to soften. Leave in the cellar! One of the greatest Cannubis ever. From the original parcel of the vineyard. Aged five years in cask and two years in bottle. Try after 2030.James Suckling | 100 JSFresh, harmonious and long, with cherry, plum, toast, sandalwood and forest aromas and flavors, this red is mellowing, with hints of mushroom and leather seeping in, along with tobacco and mint. Best from 2025 through 2045. 500 cases made, 100 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 95 WSOnly released in the best vintages, the Damilano 2016 Barolo Riserva Cannubi 1752 (with 6,000 bottles made) starts off a bit slow like some of the other wines in this portfolio and requires a little extra time to open. That shy beginning slowly embraces dark fruit, blackcurrant, peat moss and crushed stone. This Riserva offers an extra layer of density and power (with a 15% alcohol content). It would benefit from clarity on the bouquet, and surely this will come with time.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94 RPAromas recalling purple flower, baked plum, tobacco and cake spice form the nose. 2018 luciano sandrone barolo aleste Barolo

The 2018 Sandrone Barolo Aleste comes from grapes from the Cannubi Boschis vineyard but is called ’Aleste’ as a combination of the names of Luciano Sandrone’s grandchildren - Alessia and Stefano. These wines are very Burgundy-like in their weight, texture and finesse but with the added depth and grip of Nebbiolo. This 2018 has a delicacy on the nose with bright red cherry and very subtle spice notes. It has a largesse and generosity of texture, with rounded, sandy-textured tannins and a slightly more clipped, assertive note. It just flows with ease and charm across the palate. Very beautiful, with a forceful personality. Wait maybe two years and drink for 20 plus. The Wine Independent | 97 TWIMade with fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the Luciano Sandrone 2018 Barolo Aleste is plump and ripe, but this wine also shows a more delicate character that is its ace card. The aromas are filigreed and fine with dark fruit, spice and licorice. The effect is integrated, and the wine shows a lovely, softer personality to balance out this mildly concentrated expression.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RPAn open-knit Barolo highlighted by plum, cherry, leather and tar flavors. Supple in texture before firming up, with dusty, refined tannins lingering on the finish. This should evolve nicely with some bottle age. Best from 2025 through 2043. 800 cases made, 200 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 94 WSThe 2018 Barolo Aleste is gorgeous, but also very quite today. There’s terrific purity to the dark red/purplish fruit and a good bit of volume too, but readers will have to be patient. Bright acids and firm tannins lend energy. I admire the presence and texture here. The Aleste, from Cannubi Boschis, benefits from a site that can handle moisture. This is nicely done.Vinous Media | 94 VMDried red berries and dried flowers, almost tobacco on the nose. Citrus and minty notes add character. Medium-to full-bodied, elegant and silky palate that thickens out with fine, creamy tannins as it progresses. Super texture to this, gently coating the palate. Rather firmer just at the end for now. Really refined and elegant. Best from 2024.James Suckling | 94 JSFragrant purple flower, woodland berry and menthol aromas form the nose along with whiffs of spice. 2019 elio grasso barolo gavarini chiniera Barolo

The 2019 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is just superb, with layers of pure fruits and spices interwoven with vibrant cherry liqueur, candied roses, incense, and baking spice. Harmonious and balanced from the start, it offers ripe tannins, a seamless spine of fresh acidity, and fantastic length that leaves me wanting more. As it opens, it reveals more nuanced notes of apricot and saline earth. An outstanding medium to full-bodied red, this is one to cellar for a few years, as it has a ways to go before its full spectrum is revealed. Drink 2026-2050.Jeb Dunnuck | 98 JDWith vines adjacent to forests on white chalky soils, the Elio Grasso 2019 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is a luminous and very beautiful wine. Vintner Gianluca Grasso called this "the helicopter vintage" because he actually rented a helicopter to fly over the vines for 45 minutes to dry them from rain right before harvest. As he tells it, this was a costly but good decision because 15 minutes after he finished harvesting on October 26, heavy rain came and lasted an entire week. Thanks to these dramatic measures, the grape skins were excellent, and maceration with submerged cap lasted 55 days. That’s how perfect the skins were. This balanced wine shows extreme precision and elegance.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97 RPThe 2019 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is classically austere and just gorgeous right out of the gate. Soaring aromatics and fine, sculpted fruit race out of the glass. Crushed rose petal, cinnamon, orange peel and mint are all beautifully delineated. 2019 elio grasso barolo ginestra casa mate Barolo

Very different from the Gavarini Chiniera, the 2019 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté shows more bite, structure and a bigger tannic impact. Fruit was harvested a bit earlier, but healthy grape skins allowed for 52 days of maceration. This wine shows beautiful intensity and fullness with dark fruit, earth, hazelnut and dark plum. Surrounded by forests, the greenery gives balance to this wine by moderating temperatures. In fact, this site saw up to 10 degrees Celsius drops in diurnal temperatures, leading to thick skins and ideal phenolic ripeness.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97+ RPAnother remarkable wine from this outstanding and tension-packed vintage, the 2019 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate takes on a bit more introspective nature, with black cherry, cracked peppercorn, licorice, and wet asphalt. Full-bodied, it offers sweet tannins and notes of balsamic herbs, violets, leather, and black raspberry that move through the palate at a glacial pace without feeling weighted. I would recommend cellaring for a few years, after which it will be perfect for winter weather evenings by the fireside over the coming decades. Drink 2026-2050.Jeb Dunnuck | 97 JDThe 2019 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is rich, dark and explosive. From this vantage point, you look up at Novello and the Elvio Cogno winery built midway up the incline. The 2019 Barolo Ravera benefits from this special place and represents a wider net of fruit selected from across the estate vineyard. As a result, Ravera often shows extra versatility and depth. 2019 g.d. vajra barolo bricco delle viole Barolo

The last wine poured at my tasting at the winery is the G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Bricco delle Viole. With its high vantage point in the hills west of Barolo, Bricco delle Viole is a world apart in terms of soils (with Sant’Agata marl and fossils) and even harvest times. Slow and careful ripening like the kind that characterizes fruit in 2019 renders a very delicate and ethereal expression with floral tones, wild mint and licorice. This organic wine is solid in build and structure. Indeed, Isidoro Vaira remarks that Nebbiolo tannins have changed since the 1970s and 1980s. Sweet macerated cherry, spice, cedar, tobacco and licorice give the 2019 lovely inner sweetness. The 2019 is marked by considerable youthful austerity and plenty of tannin at this stage. Hopefully more Cannubi sensuality will emerge over time.Vinous Media | 91 VM

2019 massolino barolo parafada Barolo

With fruit from 60- to 65-year-old vines in Serralunga d’Alba, the Massolino 2019 Barolo Parafada is vibrant and bright with very pretty aromas of wild cherry, blue flower, iron ore and rusty nail. The wine displays very pretty intensity but remains balanced all the while. There is a lot of precision and definition in this well-structured Nebbiolo. Be patient with this wine. Some 6,000 bottles will be released this fall.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97+ RPThe 2019 Barolo Parafada is a wine of tremendous inner strength, as if all of its energy is focused inwards. Dark cherry, smoke, leather, gravel, scorched earth and licorice slowly come alive in the glass. Dense, potent and muscular, the 2019 offers tons of textural intensity and brooding, virile power. It is fascinating to taste next to the Margheria, which is a bit more aromatic and nuanced, while the Parafada is all muscle. This is one of the best editions I can remember tasting.Vinous Media | 96 VMWonderful aromas of violets, red roses, raspberries and orange peel follow through to a medium to full body, with chewy tannins and a fresh and vivid finish. Needs time to soften. Best after 2028.James Suckling | 95 JSThe initially shy nose opens to reveal aromas of underbrush, camphor, leather and a hint of dog rose. On the full-bodied, austere palate, a backbone of firm, close-grained tannins supports black cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice before finishing on notes of blood orange and tobacco. Drink 2029–2044. Abv: 14% Kerin O’Keefe | 94 KO

The 2019 Barolo Parussi is Massolino’s sole Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. A wine of total grace and refinement, the 2019 is pure seduction. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berry fruit, orange peel and rose petal soar out of the glass. Readers will find an elegant, sublime Barolo that hits all the right notes. Don’t miss it.Vinous Media | 97 VMThe Massolino 2019 Barolo Parussi (with 9,000 bottles made) has dark fruit and savory spice that make for a very firm and compact wine. This is an upfront and quite muscular expression with fruit from one of the northernmost sites in Castiglione Falletto. There is some firmness to the tannins that will require more aging time. This wine is set to hit the market in the fall of 2023.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPBalsamic aromas of camphor align with earthy scents of tilled soil, new leather and dog rose on this full-bodied red. It’s firm, concentrated and savory, delivering ripe black raspberry, juicy Marasca cherry, baking spice and tobacco set against tightly woven, velvety tannins that envelope the rich flavors. Drink 2029 -2049. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe | 95 KOVery pretty with pure and fresh fruit and focused tannins. Medium- to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and a bright and vivid finish. Shows tension and brightness. Flowers and sliced strawberries at the end. Drink after 2026.James Suckling | 93 JSFully focused on restrained root aromas such as rhubarb and liquorice, wrapped up in sweet violet, rose. red currants and pomegranate, this 2019 is quite austere, with good concentration of blood orange on the finish, yet thick, dusty and austere tannins. It will evolve with its sternness. The wine ages for 30 months in large Slavonian oak.Decanter | 93 DEC

2019 michele chiarlo barolo cannubi Barolo

The Michele Chiarlo 2019 Barolo Cannubi is a fleshed-out expression of Nebbiolo with a medium build and good structure. There is a dusty mineral tone on the bouquet that transitions to crushed rose, cassis, blood orange and violet. Enjoying excellent exposures on steep slopes, Cannubi is always a classic wine, but it is especially so in this balanced vintage.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPRose petal, grilled herb and camphor aromas come to the forefront on Michele Chiarlo’s 2019 Cannubi along with whiffs of crushed berry and leather. Still youthfully austere, the focused, elegantly structured palate offers juicy Morello cherry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco before closing on hints of salted almond. Taut, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity provide support. Drink 2027–2039. Kerin O’Keefe | 95 KOThe 2019 Barolo Cannubi is laced with hints of kirsch, cedar, dried leaves, mint and leather. Here, too, there’s a good bit of complexity, but these are the aromas and flavors I would expect to see in a slightly older wine. I would give the tannins a year or two to soften, and also not push my luck on aging. Sweet floral and spice notes linger.Vinous Media | 93 VMVery perfumed with dried flowers and sliced strawberries with some meat on the nose. Medium body. Fresh and linear. Tight at the end. Shows finesse. Drink in two or three years.James Suckling | 92 JS

2019 oddero barolo villero Barolo

With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the 2019 Barolo Villero is graceful and light with a beautifully silky approach to the palate. It is pleasing to the eye, thanks to the shiny ruby color that is characteristic of this vintage, and to the nose, thanks to a graceful bouquet with redcurrant, spice and blue flower. It shows similar traits to the mouth, thanks to a very sharp or linear element. Oddero’s Villero knocks it out of the park across this portfolio of new releases. This is a 6,000-bottle production.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RPFrom 1.44 hectares of 53-year-old vines with a southeast exposure, this wine is traditionally handled and aged for 30 months in large oak vessels. Intense intoxicating floral rose and violet aromas are soaked in red cherry and incense flavours, with pot pourri depth supported by a firm structure. The attack is velvety, the acidity refreshing and integrated. There’s a lot of substance here but with great integration, which results in a tight-knit finish wrapped up in a a bitter orange aftertaste. A classic.Decanter | 95 DECLove the aromas of freshly sliced strawberries with lemon bush and hibiscus that follow through to a medium body with fine and chewy tannins, and a fresh and focused finish. A linear and poised young Barolo. Drink after 2027.James Suckling | 95 JSBalsamic aromas recalling eucalyptus and menthol mingle with rose, violet, forest floor and tobacco on this fragrant, full-bodied red. Tightly knit with youthful intensity, the structured palate palate also shows great elegance, delivering ripe red cherry, spiced cranberry, licorice and a hint of coffee bean set against a backbone of firm, close-grained tannins. It’s still rather austere so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2029–2049. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe | 95 KOThe 2019 Barolo Villero is a powerful, classically austere young Barolo. Then again, that is Villero. Bright acids and clean mineral underpinnings give the 2019 striking energy. Spice, dried flowers, mint, crushed rocks, cranberry and pine all build with a bit of time in the glass. I very much admire the precision here, but the Villero clearly needs time. The only question is how much.Vinous Media | 94 VM
