Short answer? Yes!

But it's really more than just good. It's exceptional. Year in and year out the top Pinot Noir producers in California such as Kistler, Aubert, Marcassin etc, make great wines but rarely do you see a vintage that is consistently great across the board. If you are a pinot noir lover this is a vintage you will want to stock up on, trust me!

When describing this vintage, some of the qualities that come to mind for me are fresh, impeccably balanced, soft tannins that almost come across as silky, and overall just a great sense of purity. Winemakers hit it big in this vintage. Exceptional vintages of Pinot Noir come across very infrequently. It's not a secret to any great winemaker that this grape varietal is extremely difficult to grow. But when you have that once in blue moon growing season you have a chance to make world class wines and in 2007 this is precisely what happened. The wonderful thing about this vintage is that while the wines are approachable and drinking now, most have long lives ahead of them as well and will continue to improve with age, much like a classic pinot noir vintage from Burgundy.

The last outstanding year for California Pinot Noir was probably 1994. In this vintage Robert Parker rated it 92 points overall, his highest scoring vintage ever. I predict that he will rate the 2007 vintage at least 95 points if not higher. Wine Spectator has broken it down even further with their ratings on this soon to be classic vintage:

Wine Spectator 2007 Pinot Noir Rating Breakdown
2007 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir - 97 Points (Highest Scoring Ever)
2007 Carneros Pinot Noir - 94 Points (Highest Scoring Ever)
2007 Monterey Pinot Noir - 97 Points (Highest Scoring Ever)
2007 Santa Barbara Pinot Noir - 93 Points (Tied with 04 for Highest Ever)
2007 Sonoma - 98 Points ( Highest Scoring Ever)

The only drawback that I can see with this vintage is that the wines will disappear quickly from the market. In many cases production can be quite small. Only a couple hundred cases here and there. It's not like the easier grape varietals which can produce tens of thousands of cases. Because Pinot Noir is so tough to grow yields are small and the strict selection of grapes is absolutely crucial in making this varietal a success.

I've tasted over 75+ Pinot Noirs from 2007. Here are 10 of my favorites from this vintage in no particular order. Some we sell and some we don't. These are all superb wines and most won't break the bank.
