A significant step up from Le Pupille’s regular Morellino di Scansano, it swaps the 10% of Ciliegiolo and Alicante for 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and rather than a fresh, unoaked style, this Riserva is initially matured in large Slavonian oak casks (Sangiovese) and small barriques (Cabernet), then blended and finished in the large casks. 2020 was a ‘really nice vintage for Cabernet,’ according to winemaker Ettore. Balsamic and saline, it has good acidity allied to tangy red fruits and plummy darker fruits, with some earthy depth. Some grippy tannins provide structure for ageing, but this is also drinkable right off the bat.Decanter | 92 DECThe nose leans sweet, with vanilla, cherries, strawberries and a touch of blood orange, but undertones of spices and earth emerge with time. The Ornellaia 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia (a proprietary blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is a generous and darkly toned red blend that has the extra fruit fiber, sweetness and generous plumpness of a warm vintage. The fullness of the fruit is on full display, but in a very relaxed and natural manner. The wine never feels like too much. The tannins are yielding and velvety, and this purebred Tuscan red wraps thickly over the palate. The 2020 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Gepin is deep, flavorful with tons of character. It emerges from the Cottà cru, where the wines are naturally rich and creamy. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, leather and incense all open nicely. A year of aging in cask adds structure. The Garblèt Sue’ is usually marked by incisive, forbidding tannins, but in 2020 it is pure sensuality. High-toned floral overtones grace the exotic finish.
