2019 paul lato il padrino bien nacido vineyard syrah California Red

The 2019 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is stunning with its quiet intensity, elegance and detail: blueberry pie, lilac and violet, prosciutto and mint chocolate define the nose. The medium-bodied palate is light on its feet, velvety in texture and seamlessly fresh, although it takes significant time in the glass to really unfold. Wow! It deserves 3-5 years to unwind in bottle and will be long-lived in the cellar. Drink Date 2024 - 2034 Robert Parker The Wine Advocate | 98 RPThe 2019 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from further north, in Santa Maria, and it was mostly destemmed as well and spent 19 months in close to two-thirds new French oak. More Jamet-like notes of ripe blackberries, smoked game, ground pepper, and spring flowers define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with a perfectly balanced, multi-dimensional texture, incredible tannins, and a great, great finish. This is another brilliant, magical Syrah from Lato that flirts with perfection.Jeb Dunnuck | 98 JDThe 2019 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard Il Padrino is silky, perfumed and gracious right out of the gate. This is an especially airy Syrah from Bien Nacido. The tannins are so harmonious, they are barely perceptible. A touch of Viognier in the blend adds lift to varietal dark and savory flavors. The Bien Nacido Syrah is terrific.Antonio Galloni | 95 AG

2020 andremily eaba California Red

The EABA is more Syrah-dominated and checks in as 65% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache, and the rest Viognier that saw plenty of stems and close to two years in 50% new French oak. Its inky purple hue is followed by a sensational bouquet of bloody blue fruits, black raspberries, iron, ground pepper, baking spices, and who knows what else. Incredibly complex and nuanced (yet intense) aromatically, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mouthfeel, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s certainly one of the biggest, richest wines in the lineup, yet like all of Jim’s wines, it remains light on its feet, has brilliant purity of fruit, and is as drinkable as could be.Jeb Dunnuck | 99 JDThe 2020 EABA ("end all be all"), still in barrel, is a blend of 65% Syrah, 22% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache and 3% Viognier. Made using 70% whole clusters, it comes from several vineyards in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, including Bien Nacido, White Hawk, Larner, Slide Hill and Alta Mesa. It will mature for around 22 months in 50% new and 50% used French barriques. Opaque ruby-purple in color, the 2020 EABA has gorgeous scents of blackberry and blueberry jam, dried herbs, lavender, coffee, licorice and loamy earth. The full-bodied palate is powerful yet light on its feet, its youthfully concentrated fruits unfolding as the wine glides through the mouth. It has abundant, finely grained tannins, integrated acidity and loads of spicy and floral accents across the long finish. Tasted May 25, 2022, it will be bottled in mid-August 2022. Around 750 cases and a few magnums will be made. It will be packaged and sold as a three-bottle set ($330), and each magnum will be sold in a box set with the 2020 Andremily Grenache.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96-98 RPThe 2020 EABA is a dense, super-ripe wine that very much shows all the radiant intensity of the year. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, new oak and lavender are dialed up to the maximum. This is a classic Andremily wine built on textural opulence and intensity. The 2020 has developed beautifully since I tased it from barrel.Vinous Media | 94 VM

Inky, black fruit, blackberry jam, espresso, mocha, licorice and spice blast across the palate. There’s not a ton of subtlety here. It will be interesting to see if this heady, potent Syrah develops over the next year.Vinous Media | 93-95 VM

2020 paul lato il padrino syrah bien nacido vineyard California Red

The 2020 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard also saw a touch of stems (5%) and was aged 19 months in two-thirds new French oak. Coming from a cooler site, it has a deep ruby/plum color as well as a great nose of ripe blackberry and mulberry fruits, notes of charred meat, iron, and baking spices, full-bodied richness, ripe and integrated tannins, and a great, great finish. Out of the two Syrahs, this beauty is a touch more balanced and elegant, and also has slightly more mid-palate density. Regardless, both are brilliant, singular wines that readers will love.Jeb Dunnuck | 98 JDThe 2020 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard Il Padrino is a brute. Most of the wines in this range are quite racy, but the Padrino is simply impenetrable as this stage. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mocha, gravel, dried herbs and menthol are some of the many notes that develop. There is some whole cluster influence, which adds complexity.Antonio Galloni | 96 AG

2021 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay 3D

Another utterly brilliant Chardonnay, the 2021 Chardonnay 3D comes from a site in the Sta. Rita Hills. It has a balanced, full-bodied, incredibly layered style as well as classic notes of honeyed citrus, stone fruits, crushed stone, and white flowers, with classic Sta. Rita Hills marine-like salinity and oyster shell-like nuances. A powerful, concentrated effort, it has flawless balance, beautiful freshness, and a great finish. It’s one of the finest Chardonnays in this report. Hats off to Greg Brewer for continuing to set his own path and make richly textured, powerful, world class Chardonnay.Jeb Dunnuck | 99 JDA gorgeously knit together Chardonnay of depth and vibrance from the 4ha and aptly named 3D Vineyard. Five clones comprise this Chardonnay, creating a marriage of verve and opulence with aromas of honeyed pear, candied ginger and briny seaspray aromas. The palate is lush, offering ample depth. Flavours of hazelnut skin, savoury thyme and lemon oil make way for concentrated lemon cream notes. Just stunning.Decanter | 96 DECThe 2021 Chardonnay 3D is a powerful, phenolic wine, tempered by the cool nature of the year. Citrus peel, white flowers, herbs, mint and crushed rocks abound. More than anything else, the 3D impresses with its textural resonance and palate presence. Superb.Vinous Media | 95 VMThe 2021 Chardonnay 3D opens with matchstick aromas that give way to perfumed quince, peach and exotic floral and ginger tones. The light-bodied palate, however, is bright, salty and mouthwatering. It has a luxuriously silky texture and an expansive finish that hints at latent exotic tones. It’s the most coiled of the Brewer-Clifton Chardonnays this year and will benefit from several years in bottle.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94+ RPThis has terrific intensity and density to the mango, peach and citrus flavors and bright hard lemon candy notes. Reveals peppery white flower and lime sherbet elements that sing out on the finish, while details of fresh-clipped herbs and green tea linger. Drink now. 666 cases made.Wine Spectator | 93 WSSubtle and yet expressive in measured ways, this bottling offers lychee, lemongrass, Mandarin orange pith and wet rock aromas on the nose. The palate lands softly at first and then comes the rising acidity and chalky texture, framing lemon-spiked meringue and toasted pine nut flavors.Wine Enthusiast | 93 WE

2021 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Machado

Lastly, the 2021 Pinot Noir Machado is similarly darker ruby and translucently hued and offers up a smorgasbord-like array of red and black berries, smoked herbs, underbrush, and gamey, foresty, marine-like nuances. Flawlessly balanced, deep, rich, and textured, it has an awesome mid-palate, integrated tannins, and heavenly finish. This incredible Pinot Noir stopped me in my tracks and might be the finest I’ve tasted from Brewer. It can be drunk any time over the coming 10-15 years.Jeb Dunnuck | 99 JDSourced from a 6ha plot owned by the Machado family comes this mesmerising and thought-provoking Pinot Noir from the Sta Rita Hills and the inimitable Greg Brewer. This wine has a sinewy muscularity that comes from its ripeness but is undeniably fresh and vibrant. Brewer focuses on clarity in communicating the Sta Rita Hills in his Pinot Noir. Whole cluster and neutral barrels are key elements of his winemaking approach. The aromatics are both generous and measured. Notes of candied berries mingle with feral savoury elements and harken to notions of turned earth, fresh mint and marjoram. The palate shows lush berries, ample savoury spice, white pepper, crushed black tea leaves and pine sap. It reveals itself over the course of moments spent in contemplation and sheer enjoyment.Decanter | 97 DECSuper juicy, youthfully bright and very expressive, with waves of blood orange, mulberry, griotte and damson plum fruit almost pouring through, harnessed gently by rooibos tea and ocean breeze minerality. Ripe and full in feel, this gorgeous young wine doesn’t sacrifice its racy edge thanks to a beautifully subtle tug of savory through the very long finish. -- Non-blind Brewer-Clifton Machado Pinot Noir vertical (January 2024). Drink now through 2037. 586 cases made.Wine Spectator | 95 WSGreg Brewer’s wines manage to reflect both a winemaking style and a specific site at the same time. In this version, aromas of sour cherry, pepper and herbs lead into a palate loaded with raspberry jellies and more minty herbs, capturing the wind-cooled sunshine and surrounding nature with glee.Wine Enthusiast | 95 WEThe 2021 Pinot Noir Machado has deep, gently broody scents of pomegranate, blackberry, Angostura bitters and dark spices. The medium-bodied palate is chalky with vibrant acidity, a concentrated core of spicy fruit and a long, layered finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94 RPThe 2021 Pinot Noir Machado opens with a good burst of fruit, but then loses much of that intensity on the mid palate and finish. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and crushed rocks. This soft, very pretty Pinot Noir offers good depth in the understated style of the year.Vinous Media | 93 VM
