The 1924 Latour shows a little funk on the nose at first, but underneath it is stacked vivacious red and black fruit, cedar, sandalwood and mint. There is a subtle peppermint note here, a trait commonly found with the 1945 Latour. After a couple of hours decanting and the aromatics are frankly “off the charts”, bursting with precocious kirsch and cherry fruit laced with graphite, not unlike the show-stealing bottle encountered a decade ago. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannin, almost Burgundy-like in texture with a piquancy that pricks up the senses. Velvety smooth, the 1924 moves up the gears with aeration until, just like the nose, the senses of seduced by the lavish red and black fruit and the precision on the finish. In a vertical that included the 1929, 1945 and 1961, the 1924 deserves its place amongst the pantheon of legendary Latours. Tasted at the Latour dinner in Hong Kong. Vinous Media
