Wine Critic Reviews:

...The multidimensional nose offers up notes of...espresso, black cherries, prunes, cedar, iodine, and iron. Extremely complex aromatically, this full-bodied, still tannic, concentrated, old style Bordeaux has two to three decades of life remaining. It is impressive, but clearly from the old-school of Bordeaux winemaking...huge depth and body. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2035.

(Château Calon-Ségur (Previous Example)) This note on the ’82 Calon-Ségur dates back a couple of years, but was from a bottle that I would guess hailed from a different lot, and the wine was a bit different in personality, if not dramatically superior to the example that we tasted at our Washington event. The bouquet is deep, complex and much more vibrant, with a bit of the classic Calon red fruit in evidence in its mélange of red and black cherries, black truffles, Cuban cigars, gravelly dark soil tones, iron, tobacco smoke and a lovely topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and quite complex, with excellent focus and purity, a superb core of fruit, suave, modest tannins and outstanding balance and grip on the very, very long, pure and classic finish. While the quality differential between the two bottlings is not particularly dramatic, I have a strong preference for the more vibrant and red fruity personality of this bottling, which I equate with the greatest examples of Calon-Ségur I have had the pleasure of tasting. I should note that I had the opportunity to try another bottle of ’82 just before the release of this article, which was potentially glorious, but undone by TCA taint. (Drink between 2010-2050)

Good medium red, with a hint of amber at the rim. Very aromatic, inviting nose of redcurrant, leather and tobacco. Intensely flavored and gripping, with a slightly raisiny singed plum character but also solid framing acidity that gives the wine a juicy quality. Quite fat and full. Finishes with superb structure and grip. (A second, rather different bottle of equal quality showed cherry, currant, licorice and menthol aromas; a dense, backward palate impression; and lovely restrained sweetness and a note of spice cake on the youthfully firm finish.)

Sokolin 1982 Calon Segur Tasting Notes:

The grapes that form this famously attractive wine draw their resilience and characteristically acidic profile from their birthplace of clay soils which makes its way through to the wine, giving it a bold, damp, earthy charisma and outstanding longevity. The 1982 sneaks this side seamlessly into the otherwise deep berry, walnut and cigar nose, but confirms it gallantly in the lovely palate. A mix of iron ore, cassis, pepper and tea makes itself heard and felt throughout the mouth, the sweet tannins topped off with chocolate shavings and coffee. The performance is long and deliciously expressive, takes its time and intensifies right up to the culmination, at which point time could have stopped entirely.

This vintage promises decades of rich, mineral potency ahead of it, letting you sit on it until you're ready to finally uncork it. A fantastic bottle to dedicate to children or even grandchildren as it will grow even stronger roots and sophisticated texture as generations pass, not to mention the sentimental value of such a profound gift. Grab a bottle before the opportunity is gone and create tradition now.
