Both vintages of Gruaud-Larose absolutely stand out in this lineup, and I recommend them both for thoroughly enjoyable drinking today. This was pretty monolithic when young and evolved very slowly. It's still showing tons of black fruits with tobacco, coffee and truffle. Chewy tannins are still evident, with everything clearly signposting a great vintage from legendary winemaker Georges Pauli. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Drink between 2019-2035

There seems to be no doubt about the quality of the 1986 Gruaud-Larose, which may rival the extraordinary 1982, 1961, 1945, and 1928. It has a black/purple color, mammoth structure, a fabulous wealth of fruit, and a finish that lasts for at least a minute. Given its enormous structure, fabulous concentration, and massive tannins, when will it be ready to drink? Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025. Last tasted, 5/93

Very youthful deep ruby-red color. Brooding nose offers perfumed blackcurrant, mineral, violet and quinine aromas. Big, dense and rich, conveying an impression of strong extract to the powerful, well-delineated blackberry and herb flavors. The long, tactile finish features chewy but polished tannins and a lingering floral note. Though ready to drink now, this wine will continue to age gracefully. One of the best Gruaud-Larose wines of the past 40 years.

One good look at the dark, vigorous color of this wine suggests that you're dealing with a vintage that hasn't fully shed its youthful skin. Give it time to breathe, and it will take your breath away with its compelling aromatic cocktail and dense, forward flavor profile. On the nose, you're greeted by the classic Pauillac aromatic combination of cedar and lead pencil. From the second your lips touch the drink, you're treated to a balanced, smooth drinking experience. The complexity and elegance are just as you would expect from a wine of this stature. The fruit is ripe, concentrated, and remarkably youthful, given the wine's age. The finish is remarkably long and boasts an almost ethereal quality.

Wines like this are best enjoyed over a meal with your friends and loved ones. This little gem has enough life in it to go another decade, although it's more than drinkable today.
