Wine Critic Reviews:

Smooth and succulent, with attractive earth, tobacco and cassis aromas and flavors. Despite its intensity and concentration, it never loses its sense of balance and harmony.

(Château Palmer) It had been several years since I had last tasted the 1986 Palmer, which is a wine that I had always liked since first tasting it upon release, and found it singing at our vertical in October. The bouquet is deep, pure and aristocratic, as it soars from the glass in a perfumed blaze of mulberries, blood orange, Cuban tobacco, lovely soil tones, violets and a very delicate framing of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is medium-full, focused and utterly seamless, with a closed, intensely flavored personality, an excellent core of fruit, moderate tannins and absolutely stunning precision and grip on the very long, complex finish. This is a great Palmer in the making, and probably the most underrated vintage of the 1980s for this fine château. (Drink between 2016-2050).

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 1986 Château Palmer might not embrace you like the 1985, and yet it remains a Margaux with pedigree. It offers blackcurrant pastilles, raspberry and cedar on the nose, violets unfurling with time in the glass, guiding the drinker to its appellation of origin. The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, as expected, more austere and reserved than the 1985, but with fine backbone and an attractive masculine, tobacco-infused finish that is precise and long. It is not in the same class as the 1989, but it has clearly reached its drinking plateau and should continue there for at least another decade. Tasted May 2015.

Sokolin 1986 Palmer Tasting Notes:

It can be hard to explain the appeal of a fully mature, well-developed wine to someone who hasn’t experienced one for themselves. Instead of trying, why not offer up a glass from this majestic ’86 Palmer? This veteran speaks for itself, with clear terroir expression and impressive potency. On the nose, you are blessed by a youthful-seeming, pungent aroma of wild raspberries, strawberry, along with a floral undercurrent that will make you believe you’re in the Garden of Eden. On the palate, the attack continues, with soft, well-integrated tannins and earthy mushroom joining the already rich and complex flavor profile. This Palmer has more layers than a wedding cake and boasts a finish that could outlast a glacier. If you find yourself fortunate enough to own a bottle or two from this amazing vintage, don’t let your friends miss out on what could very well be their vinous awakening. This wine is one for the history books.

The limestone-based earth is rich in calcium, and the almost oceanic climate conditions give the staple Bordeaux grape varietals vigor and flavor like nowhere else. For their illustrious reds, Bordeaux winemakers rely on a proven combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Meanwhile, a sip of their excellent white wine hints at the use of Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varietals carries a unique identity, making every quality wine a character piece to rival Citizen Kane. It can be incredibly hard to choose only a few wines to collect for your cellar!
