Wine Critic Reviews:

...the 1988 is a classic expression of Lafite. This deeply-colored wine exhibits the tell-tale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brilliantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward, yet impressively endowed Lafite-Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage! Anticipated maturity: now-2035. Robert Parker

Sokolin 1988 Lafite Rothschild Tasting Notes:

Brace for impact, because this raging beast of a wine will take your world by storm. This is a reasonably straightforward, masculine wine, with a monumental amount of power and energy. It's a battering ram that cannot be stopped once it's unleashed. On the nose, you're assaulted by a compelling bouquet of truffle, asphalt, volcanic ash, and earthy undergrowth, while the palate gets overwhelmed by a veritable tsunami of ripe, potent fruit flavors. The acidity cuts through the richness nicely, and the wine displays more than adequate body and structure. It's already a well-developed, nuanced wine, and has enough fruit in the tank to last for another decade or two. There's no hurry to drink right away. The finish is monolithic, prolonged, and potent, a faithful echo of the incredibly powerful wine you just experienced. Another wonderful offering from Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, and a wine that will go down in history.
