1988 Mouton Rothschild- 750 ml
Wine Critic Reviews:
James Suckling | 93 JS
Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish. Not very dense. This pales compared with the other top Pauillacs. I never thought this was a perfect wine, but it gives great pleasure.--'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. 20,000 cases made.

Sokolin 1988 Mouton Rothschild Tasting Notes:
This outstanding red will tease your senses in all possible ways. You won’t be able to resist and let it decant for too long – the gorgeous aromas will come right at you and make you overwhelmed by some lovely red fruits, noticeable earthy tones and a bit of leather and tobacco. Quite interesting, which will make you rush for the first sip, curious about the palate. You won’t regret it – you’ll feel seduced by all the strong, but smooth tannins and delightful flavors of darks fruits and brown sugar.
|Country||France: Words fail us when trying to adequately portray France's place in the world of wine. It's downright impossible to imagine what wine would feel and taste like had it not been for France's many, many viticultural pioneers. Fine wine is the blood of France's vigorously beating heart, and it finds itself in many aspects of French culture. With a viticultural history that dates all the way back to the 6th century BC, France now enjoys its position as the most famous and reputable wine region on the planet. If you have a burning passion for masterfully crafted, mouth-watering, mind-expanding wines, then regular visits to France are probably already in your schedule, and for a good reason.|
|Producer||Mouton: Chateau Mouton Rothschild is the only one of the first growths to have remained in the ownership of the same family since the classification. The wines were best depicted by Ian D'Agata, one of the leading experts in Italian wine, among others, said Mouton is "opulent, luscious and rich, multi-layered and complex… Rich and ripe but marvelously precise and light on its feet." The Chateau Mouton Rothschild estate includes 205 acres of vines at Pauillac planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%), and it has been used for cultivating vineyards since the early middle ages. The Premier Cru Classe from the Bordeaux region has been the center of the wine business and technical innovations since the early 20th century.|
|Region||Bordeaux: Even among the greatest and most reputable wine regions on the planet, Bordeaux stands above the rest. The winemakers of this region have a single-minded dedication to the fine art of viticulture and their efforts never fail to show. If you consider yourself a fine wine enthusiast, you owe it to yourself to visit Bordeaux - life changing. Whether you wish to drink some inspirational and gripping wine as soon as possible, or you want to add some masterpieces to your collection, no region on Earth is a more obvious choice. The noble and beautiful Garonne and Dordogne rivers surge through southwestern France, enriching the soil in a way very few other places can boast. The limestone-based earth is rich in calcium, and the almost oceanic climate conditions give the staple Bordeaux grape varietals vigor and flavor like nowhere else. For their illustrious reds, Bordeaux winemakers rely on a proven combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Meanwhile, a sip of their excellent white wine hints at the use of Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varietals carries a unique identity, making every quality wine a character piece to rival Citizen Kane. It can be incredibly hard to choose only a few wines to collect for your cellar!|
|Type of Wine||Bordeaux Red: Picture in your mind a combination of cedar, lead pencil, blackcurrant, plum and mineral aromatics, and texture that caresses your palate like a playful lover. The experience is thrilling from the first whiff to the final seconds of a tannic, generous finish - that is what you'll get from a Bordeaux Red|
|Varietal||Bordeaux Blend: Since its birth in France, the art of Bordeaux-inspired blends has been brought to regions like California, and Washington, where New World visionaries add their own unique spin to the formula, creating mouth-watering tributes to Bordeaux's viticultural greatness. Today, with a compelling cultural mixture, sampling Bordeaux blends is more excited than ever.|
needs more time to evolve and deepen the complexityA charming display of Pauillac with its berry and smoke profile, colors of coffee and cacao and vanilla pushing through. My husband and I had this over dinner the other evening and were left with slightly different impressions so I thought I'd better share both perspectives. The wine was very polished and fancy, highly-fragrant and entirely round. Its seamless texture had us both satisfied and full, but for him the display lacked some of the usual Mouton power. I, on the other hand, felt this wasn't in any way weak, just needs some more time to evolve and deepen the complexity it already exhibits between the secondary spice and woody hues. We were very grateful to have shared this delightful wine and can't wait to see how age treats it, perhaps over another dinner some years from now...
refined conduct and silky texture over raw forceI absolutely loved the elegance and graceful demeanor of this vintage. Not over-delivered or in your face, it rewards patience and trust as well as it does good taste. Full of oriental spices, cedar, cassis and perfumed with the ever-present vanilla and chocolate. I'd love to see a wine that outclasses this beauty. Decanted for an hour it was still a tad reserved but simply blossomed before my eyes and all over my tastebuds, with perfect balance and delicate brilliance. I served it to friends, they immediately guessed a very fine Mouton. We agree this wine will reach full maturity in about a decade from now and gain plenty of attention then. But if you, like us, prefer refined conduct and silky texture over raw force, we can guarantee you'd appreciate this lovely wine.
