1989 Margaux- 750 ml
Wine Critic Reviews:
Sokolin 1989 Margaux Tasting Notes:
This spectacular vintage presents itself with an enjoyable bouquet of classic Bordeaux notes, elegant violets, cassis and some sweet fruits, coming right out of a glass filled with this lovely mid ruby liquid. On the palate, it goes from perfect to better than perfect. The full-bodied drink that melts away as you're enjoying the mouthfeel, with great density and well-balanced acidity, ends with a brilliant, long aftertaste and makes you crave for more right away.

tastes like an emotional roller-coaster rideI'm siding with Robert Parker on this one, in that I consider the 1990 vintage to be superior to this one, but that doesn't mean this wine is really lacking in any aspect. It's a great Margaux in an ocean of good ones, and the concentration and depth of flavor really sell the experience. Whether you're sniffing, sloshing, or swallowing, your body gets to experience a layered and potent elixir, and an emotional roller-coaster ride. The finish is slightly shorter than one would hope, but it's still enthralling in its own way.
Price-wise, this wine punches a bit above its weight, being an affordable yet mesmerizing example of Chateau Margaux's brilliance.
Everything about this bottle was perfect for my tasteThe only word that could adequately describe my first experience with this little gem is “Wow.” The garnet color and an opulent nose of leather, tar, and black cherry carried me into outer space. The tannins feel very airy and elegant, like a playful summer breeze. Everything about this bottle was perfect for my taste, to the point where I can't think of anything negative to say.
I can imagine it being even more beautiful in a couple of years - a tough test of patience if I get more bottles. The price isn't super-steep, so most people reading this review can probably afford a bottle or two.
