A sensational wine that has developed exceptionally well, this dense, saturated, garnet/purple-colored wine has a super nose of smoke, camphor, mineral, black currant, and blueberry. The oak seems to take a backseat to the wealth of fruit and mineral notes. In the mouth it is full-bodied, with high but ripe tannin, wonderful sweetness, extract, high levels of glycerin, and relatively low acidity. It is a wine of great character, richness, complexity, as well as multiple dimensions. Anticipated maturity: Now-2015. Last tasted, 11/02.

(Château La Fleur de Gay) Much like the 1990 La Conseillante, the 1990 La Fleur de Gay is fast approaching its apogee, offering up a complex and developed nose of black cherries, tar, bell peppers, tobacco, earth and toasty oak. Full-bodied and quite deep on the palate, this is a wine that is quite ready for drinking today, with good depth in the mid-palate, fine balance, and good length on the finish. It seems to be eight to ten years ahead of the 1989 in terms of development, and while quite a tasty bottle, nowhere near the quality level of its older sibling. (Drink between 2001-2020)
