The 1993 is also more impressive from bottle than it was from cask. All of these wines are bottled without fining or filtration. The color is an opaque purple with a black middle. The huge, exotic nose of vanilla, sweet cassis, cedar, spice, cigar box, and fruitcake is followed by a well-balanced wine of extraordinary richness, great purity, and awesome extract. The tannin is ripe and well-integrated, the acidity is low, but adequate to provide focus, and the finish lasts 30-40 seconds. This awesome 1993 once again proves how unfairly maligned this vintage has been.
The only opportunity readers will have to latch onto a bottle of these extraordinary wines (the exquisite packaging - note the Rubenesque female figure caressing a succulent bunch of grapes - is also admirable) is to get their names on the winery's mailing list.

What a joy it is to taste the 1993 Harlan Estate. The aromatics alone are captivating. Wonderfully nuanced and expressive, the 1993 is peaking today. Time has softened the tannins, yet there is plenty of depth, especially for a wine of this age. Readers can look forward to another 5-10 years of exceptional drinking. Although the vines were naturally younger when the 1993 was made than they are today, and winemaking has evolved, the reality is that the 1993, like many of these wines, really needed quite a bit of time to be at its very best.
