Wine Critic Reviews:

...the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild is unquestionably this renowned estate's greatest wine...This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted...The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years...The wine of the vintage?

Sokolin 1996 Lafite Rothschild Tasting Notes:

Good wines are a wonderful way to enhance a meal, complete a special occasion, or let a friend know you care about them. Great wines are something entirely else. They speak to us in a different way, elevate our state, convince us we are somewhere else or make our current location heaven on Earth.

Rare are the houses that consistently produce such excellent drinks, and one of them is Lafite-Rothschild. The height of this prestigious line can be summarized in the vintage of 1996, and that says a lot about this gem.

Spectacular, powerful, luxurious, the vintage must be sampled to be believed. It's purple-rimmed, full-bodied, extraordinarily opulent, highly-sophisticated and concentrated. Its incense is breath-taking, generously filled with lead pencil, cassis, leather, graphite and black currant. These notes continue into the palate, complicated by immaculate details of forest floor, cherries, chocolate, and mineral undertones. It moves with authority and grace in a display of virtue, caressing the inside of the mouth with a velvety touch and a firm, relentless grip.

Saying that it gives great satisfaction would be an understatement. Drinking this wine is an experience comparable to a milestone like the sweetness of a first kiss or the relief after a difficult period, except for the fact that this miracle is bottled and ready whenever you want it.

Be careful, though; it may be able to withstand decades in the cellar, but a wine like this doesn't stay available on the market for a long time.
