Good deep red. Compelling aromas of blueberry, blackberry, cocoa powder, roasted meat, menthol and five-spice powder. Very concentrated and sweet, but tightly wrapped; really remarkably backward for the vintage but already lush and seamless. Firm acidity gives it shape and grip rare for 1997. Finishes very long, with an intensely spicy flavor of ripe berries. This should be extremely long-lived for the vintage.

(Maison Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares Grand Cru Red) As I suspected, the magnum of this wine that I had in 2001 was flawed as this most recent mag was much fresher and, as one would expect, it resembled a younger version of the same wine in 750 ml. This is to say that it offers knock out aromas of spice, earth and black pinot fruit that introduce intense broad-scaled flavors that display superb size, power, richness and density plus outstanding length, all buffered by impressive levels of sap. Despite the sheer size and weight, this remains exceptionally well balanced and there is surprisingly good minerality in the context of the vintage on the long finish. For my taste, I would continue to hold this in magnum format for another 6 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2017).

The stunning, dark purple-colored 1997 Bonnes Mares enthralls the nose with its extraordinary baked blackberry aromas. This is a wine of unbelievable power, concentration, and exceptional extraction. Deep layers of cocoa powder-dusted figs and prunes vie with a compote of red cherries, stones, and creamed mocha flavors for the taster's attention. This full-bodied, velvety-textured, sur-maturite-laced wine lingers on the palate for at least 40 seconds. It is a prodigiously breathtaking Burgundy. Projected maturity: now-2012+.
