Sokolin 1999 Carruades de Lafite Tasting Notes:

Imagine that you need to recommend a bottle of wine to a friend who still doesn't know what Grand Cru or highly tannic descriptions mean. If you needed to recommend a start to someone who is just learning how to appreciate a great wine, you'd begin with the absolute master, a wine that would display all the most fascinating features that will turn anyone into an infatuated wine lover. You'll make no mistake if your recommendation is the 1999 Carruades de Lafite.

Carruades de Lafite is unjustly called a second wine, though this bottle without a doubt deserves to sit on the throne. This full-bodied Pauillac is an excellent representative of the appellation, and of fine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends - in this case, it's 69% Cabernet and 31% Merlot. The most planted grape variety worldwide, Cabernet Sauvignon, gives this wine a strikingly beautiful, almost purple color. Upon removing the cork, you can already feel your palate trembling with excitement, anticipating the taste that follows those delicious currants, cinnamon, chocolate, and cedar aromas.

And the flavors are nowhere near disappointing. The absolutely stunning depth and great complexity, with fine texture and enjoyable tannins that expand in your mouth, give you a life-altering experience. Considering the bouquet and the flavors, this is a classic Lafite, with a promising future and great aging potential. It is quite understandable if you can't resist it any longer and decide to treat your senses with this delicacy right away.

For their illustrious reds, Bordeaux winemakers rely on a proven combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Meanwhile, a sip of their excellent white wine hints at the use of Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varietals carries a unique identity, making every quality wine a character piece to rival Citizen Kane. It can be incredibly hard to choose only a few wines to collect for your cellar!
