Sokolin 2001 Carruades de Lafite Tasting Notes:

Wines are not just any alcoholic drinks. There's so much tradition and legend in the history of winemaking that this precious liquid has become a synonym for grace, but also for family and valuable moments shared with those who are closest to you. The purity of a well-made wine resembles that of a newborn life, cleansing your mind and soul of all the negative thoughts and opening a path towards an epiphany and gratitude.

The 2001 Carruades de Lafite may be a second wine, but it will surely become number one on your list. This spectacular Bordeaux blend is a typical representative of the sort, with a noticeable berry character and gorgeous, juicy tannins that add to the soft, velvety texture. This well-structured, stylish blend is almost half-half Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, so Merlot can finally shine through with its black cherry and plum flavors, as well as beautiful smoothness, balancing flawlessly with the tannins coming from Cabernet Sauvignon, and making this Lafite so enjoyably drinkable.

Removing the cork from this bottle will let out some ravishing scents that will become even more immersive when you pour yourself a glass of this beauty. Fresh violets, sweet berries, cherries and currants, harmoniously combined with tobacco leaves and some herbal and minty notes make this wine youthful, although it's close to being two decades old. The fruity flavors slowly slide into a slightly bitter finish that lingers around for a while and makes you want more of this supple, brilliant vintage.

The limestone-based earth is rich in calcium, and the almost oceanic climate conditions give the staple Bordeaux grape varietals vigor and flavor like nowhere else. For their illustrious reds, Bordeaux winemakers rely on a proven combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Meanwhile, a sip of their excellent white wine hints at the use of Semillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. Each of these varietals carries a unique identity, making every quality wine a character piece to rival Citizen Kane. It can be incredibly hard to choose only a few wines to collect for your cellar!
