Description: Magnon's 2007 Corbieres Campagnes comes from a schistic, centenarian plot of Carignan first separately bottled in 2005, together with another, chalky vineyard of equally old Carignan added this year, along with a smidgeon of Grenache. With an intriguing and alluring nose of machine oil, graphite, iron filings, iodine, toasted walnuts, and cherry distillate, this briefly puts me in mind of Loire Cabernet Franc or Madiran. Creamy in texture, it covers the palate with bitter-sweet, subtly tart blackberry and cherry, underlain by deep roasted nut oil and meat savor and suffused with illusive yet unmistakable extract that can only be called mineral. Strikingly long, this would seem to be a candidate for at least 4-5 years of cellaring, though one should on no account miss it young, either. Incidentally, Magnon is hoping to acquire large oaken foudres for part of the upbringing of this cuvee.
