The 2007 Sassicaia (Cabernet Sauvignon) explodes onto the palate with masses of rich, opulent fruit that caress the palate with gorgeous length and a seamless beauty that is hard to fully capture. Dark wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and herbs develop in the glass. This is an especially bold, perhaps slightly uncharacteristic Sassicaia in its extroverted personality, but it is beautiful all the same. The inner perfume and sweetness carries through the long finish, where the sheer weight and glycerol of the fruit leaves a lasting impression. The 2007 is more than a worthy follow-up to the profound 2006. While it may lack that wine’s freshness, structure and potential longevity, the 2007 is immensely appealing today, and should drink beautifully pretty much out of the gate. That said, Sassicaia is always the most restrained of Bolgheri’s heavy hitters. This is a superb effort from Tenuta San Guido. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2037.

This iconic Italian wine from Bolgheri's landmark Sassicaia vineyard (characterized by little rocks, or “sassi”) offers an elegant bouquet comprised in equal measure by mineral, fruit and spice nuances. The wine consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc and the finish is long, smooth and very fine. This is an ageworthy wine that should not be opened before 2018.

This is classy on the nose with subtle currant, sweet tobacco, cigar box and dried flowers. Cassis too. Full body, with refined tannins and a solid core of fruit. Polished and very pretty. Long and delicious already. But you have to wait on this. It has so much more to give. Try after 2015.

A splash of sweet strawberry purée just slightly indicating the age of this wine, and it is a vintage that is already drinking well. Beautiful, dancing acidity and some attractive red fruits. But it doesn’t have the full complexity of the 2008 vintage. It has a complex array of tertiary aromatics and flavours, with full leather and soft black truffle. Gentle, with softly lingering flavours.

|Producer||Sassicaia: The story of Sassicaia in the 1920s begins with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, and his dream of creating a ‘thoroughbred' wine, that at the time, was no other than Bordeaux. As all Premier Cru vineyards, grapes are hand-picked and subjected to soft pressing and fermentation in steel at a controlled temperature of 30-31 °C. After steel malolactic fermentation, the wine is placed in French oak barrels, where it ages for at least a minimum of 2 years before being bottled. The wine is characterized by an intense and regal red color. When it comes to taste, a wide variety of red fruits provide a full-bodied taste, while soft tannins ensure a long-lasting finish. The overall balanced perfection in the tasting makes Sassicaia suitable for all special occasions.|

Restrained and powerful, but there's just something missing…Last time I tried a Sassicaia, it was the well-known 2006 vintage, which blew me away with its quality and price range. The 2007 vintage is certainly a wonderful batch in its own right, but it just wasn't the same as the previous year, and I can't quite put my finger on the culprit. The flavors are all there, a lovely layered collage of dark fruits, minerals, and herbs, and the texture neatly wraps all of them into something almost magical. It's a restrained but powerful wine, with a beauty that threatens to escape the tastebuds of the beholder. There's just something missing…
A memorable experienceWhat a special little vintage. I honestly can't put into words the exact feelings my wife and I went through while drinking this wine, but I can definitely say it's a memorable experience. The dark fruit is perfectly ripe and juicy to the point where my wife is planning meals with this wine in mind for the coming holidays. This wine is better in its youth than the previous vintage, which is a plus if you're looking for something to drink right now. The price range helps me recommend the wine, as it's not a particularly expensive risk to take if you're unsure.
