Wine Critic Reviews:

A different beast, yet in the same ballpark qualitatively, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon just jumps out of the glass with a huge nose of sage brush, chocolate, violets, tobacco, and assorted sweet black and blue fruits. Showing the more exuberant, sexy style of the vintage, it’s full-bodied and concentrated, yet has terrific tannins as well as length. It’s a beautiful wine from this estate that will drink well for 3 decades or more.

...the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Reserve features a deep garnet-purple color and wonderfully expressive nose of crème de cassis, preserved plums and black forest cake with hints of cigar boxes, aniseed, dark chocolate and forest floor. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated in the mouth, the ripe, opulent black fruit is well supported by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96+ RP
Very complex and changing all the time with red fruit, tile, blackberries and a hint of black truffle. Full-bodied, firm and chewy with focus and reality. Firm and driven with compact and super fine tannins. Drink now or hold.

Mondavi's Cabernet Sauvignon The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard is fabulous. Rich, powerful and voluptuous, the 2015 oozes with class from the very first taste. The flavors are deep, dark and boldly sketched in this sumptuous, beautifully resonant Cabernet. The tannins will need time to soften, but I can't imagine readers opening bottles anytime soon. The 2015 Reserve is one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Robert Mondavi Winery.

Perfumed in rose and violet, this reserve-worthy red displays deft notes of currant, dark cherry and plum along an exotic mineral-laden lineup of crushed rock and cocoa powder. Plush and broadly expansive in tannin, it persists in a classic, old-world finish of dried herb, sage and clove. Enjoy best 2025–2030.

The fruit for this wine, from select parcels of the To Kalon vineyard, was picked between 7-24 September. The seductive cassis nose is accented by hints of camphor and forest floor, while in the mouth, blackberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruits are accompanied by black peppercorn and baking spice notes. Sinewy tannins plead for ageing. Drinking Window 2023 - 2033

Decanter | 92 DEC
Genevieve Janssens makes this wine from the benchlands of To Kalon, a vineyard that has been central to Napa Valley’s cabernet success. This vintage, from a drought year, takes time to move past some Porty notes and dry tannins, settling into its structure and gaining freshness with several days of air. The tannins turn finer and the dark fruit gains precedence, incorporating the wine’s warmth into juicy richness. Cellar it.

Wine & Spirits | 91 W&S
Very tight and structured, this stylish effort offers compact dark berry, currant, cedar and crushed rock flavors, making for a wine that is best-served by a long decant or cellar time. Best from 2021 through 2032. 7,995 cases made.

Country US: As one of the most prolific and innovative wine regions in the world, America is a joy to explore. Most wine connoisseurs will agree that the nation's finest and most compelling wines are being produced today, which means that we have front-row seats to one of the most inspirational stories in wine history. While other regions tend to focus on specific wine styles and have somewhat strict rules as to which varietals you could grow, areas like California have few such restrictions in place. As a result, creative visionaries behind America's most reputable estates have been able to develop compelling, unique, and innovative styles, with a level of terroir expression that rivals even France's largest giants.

Region California: With a history of wine production that dates back to the 18th century, California currently sits as one of the world's most prolific and reputable wine regions. With an area as vast as California, you can expect a colorful collage of terroir profiles, a series of microclimates, and micro-environments that give the wine a unique, memorable appeal. The region's produce is far from homogenized in that sense, and it would take you countless hours to sample all of it. While the region boasts scars from the Prohibition era, it went through what can only be described as a viticultural Renaissance sometime after the 1960s. At that point, California went from a port-style, sweet wine region to a versatile and compelling competitor on the world market. Today, no matter which way your taste in wine leans, you can find a new favorite producer among California's most talented. Notable sub-regions include legendary names like Napa Valley and Sonoma County, places that any wine lover would die to visit. California's quintessential warm climate allows for incredibly ripe fruit expressions, a style that provides a stark contrast to Old World-inspired, earthy classics. Even where inspiration was clearly taken from staple French appellations, Californian winemakers put their own unique spin on the wine.
Type of Wine California Red: Whether it's Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah or Zinfandel, Californian red wine producers have a lovely habit of taking a varietal and expressing its essence in a unique, never before seen way. From Napa Valley to the regions south of Los Angeles, there's a red for everyone - and it's never too late to start exploring.
