The 2016 Domaine Guyon Clos du Roy is also outstanding and has just a touch more inherent complexity to it than the excellent Bressandes, and seems likely to just nose that wine out at the wire this year for “best in cellar” awards. It was raised in the same percentage of new oak and included about the same amount of whole clusters this year. This is a superb young wine, delivering a deep and sappy bouquet of red plums, cherries, a hint of orange peel, a very complex base of soil, raw cocoa, gamebird, a touch of stem spice and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and seamlessly balanced, with a sappy core, great transparency and grip, ripe, suave tannins and a very, very long, complex finish. Outstanding! Drink till 2075.
