This packs in some solid plum sauce, cassis and cherry reduction aromas and flavors, which hold sway throughout while hints of roasted alder, sweet tobacco and ganache fill in. Lovely, buried minerality keeps it all well-supported throughout. Built for the cellar. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2038. 1,500 cases made.

Composed of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with a 3.5 pH and 14.56% alcohol, the deep purple-black colored 2018 Bellevue Mondotte opens with alluring scents of Christmas cake, blueberry pie, chocolate-covered cherries and hoisin with nuances of Chinese five spice, iron ore, rose hip tea and cracked black pepper. Full-bodied, rich, opulent and totally decadent in the mouth, the palate has a plush texture and maintains that incredible freshness that defines these beautiful wines on the terrace—finishing with tons of spicy fireworks.

The 2018 La Mondotte is another incredibly classy wine from proprietor Stefan von Neipperg and comes from a beautiful terroir situated above Pavie Decesse. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc brought up in 70% new French oak, it offers a seamless display of crème de cassis, crushed violets, and a liquid rock-like minerality. Full-bodied, with massive amounts of fruit, full-bodied richness, and building tannins, it’s an infant and will require 4-6 years of bottle age, but it’s a brilliant Saint-Émilion that will keep for 2-3 decades.

Concentrated, as this wine often is, with a silky texture and rich damson fruits, layered deeply with liquorice and chocolate. The Neipperg polish is on display in abundance. This is serious, poised and impressive. A good decade needed here before opening. Certified organic. Drinking Window 2028 - 2042.

The 2018 La Mondotte was picked from 20 September until 5 October at 40hL/ha and matured in 70% new oak. It has an impressive bouquet with pure black cherry and raspberry/cranberry aromas that gain intensity with aeration. It is very delineated, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite plush in style with a caressing, candied finish with traces of marmalade and quince on the aftertaste. This is a superb La Mondotte that will be difficult to resist in its youth.
