2023 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru Aux Beaux Bruns

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru has a deeper, richer, more tertiary nose than the preceding Aux Combottes. Touches of brown spice emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, good structure and complexity. This is a little sauvage and savory toward the lingering finish. It’s not quite up there with the superlative 2022, but it will give 15 to 20 years of drinking pleasure.Vinous Media | 92-94 VMThe premier cru of Beaux Bruns is often one of the most black fruity wines in the Barthod cellars and this is certainly the case again in 2023. The wine still shares a lovely sense of sappiness and excellent transparency with its more red fruity cousins, offering up scents of sweet dark berries, black cherries, currant leaf, woodsmoke, pigeon, a nice touch of spices, a good foundation of soil and a gentle framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely tangy in personality, with a sappy core of black fruit, fine soil inflection and grip, ripe tannins and excellent length and balance on the classy finish. (Drink between 2038-2080)John Gilman | 92+ JGMedium ruby in colour. The bouquet suggests a wine of more tension. Fresh raspberry, fine energy, still medium bodied, the oak needs to be fully digested but there is more fruit intensity at the back, and a fine precise finish. Picked at the right time.Jasper Morris | 92-93 JMA more deeply pitched nose proffers its aromas of plum, black cherry, anise, floral and discreet exotic tea wisps. Gorgeously textured and caressing middle weight flavors possess both good richness and punch while displaying a very subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift on the compact and lingering if ever-so-mildly tangy finale. 2023 Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru Les Chatelots

Domaine Barthod’s 2023 Châtelots has a lovely vein of spiciness running through both the nose and palate this year. The wine’s aromatic constellation is vibrant and complex, offering up notes of cherries, a touch of blood orange, a fine array of spice tones, chalky soil, roses, mustard seed and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and more inherently structured out of the blocks than the lovely Combottes, with a good core of fruit, ripe tannins, lovely balance and a long, nascently complex and mineral-driven finish. This will need more time in the cellar to blossom than the Combottes, but it too will be an excellent wine in due course. (Drink between 2038-2080)John Gilman | 92+ JGPaler at the rim, relatively light on the nose, but attractively floral. With juicy fruit at the front of the palate, a darker raspberry, extending quite nicely across the palate.Jasper Morris | 90-92 JMHere too the nose is fresh, bright and quite pretty with its essence of red pinot fruit, spice and floral nuances. The supple and generous yet punchy medium-bodied flavors also possess an appealing mouthfeel as well as more evident minerality on the ever-so-mildly austere finale. (Drink starting 2029)Burghound | 89-91 BHThe 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru was quite muted on the nose when I tasted on a cloudy overcast day. It has pleasant brambly red fruit, though it’s just a little somber compared to other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, not powerful but well balanced, with a straightforward strawberry-driven finish. It just needs a bit more bandwidth.Vinous Media | 88-90 VM
