Chardonnay Wines

Chardonnay isn’t just the most popular white wine in the world – it’s angelic. Anyone with a developed taste for fine wine would struggle to maintain composure after tasting some of the stronger vintages of this masterpiece. Aside from France and the United States, you can expect to encounter bottles from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Italy, Chile, and quite a few others. Every region that produces quality Chardonnay tends to add their own spin to it by including a lot of delicious fruits and changing up their techniques. It’s the perfect drink for experimentation, so why not conduct some research yourself?

You can expect your bottle of Chardonnay to include tastes such as sugary banana, a lush and juicy peach that just explodes in your mouth, robust and tropical pineapple (great for fighting off summer heat), the tried-and-true apple that adds some zest to the combination, or citrus combinations to give your drink that extra edge. If you play your cards right, the taste will always be different, and the texture never stays exactly the same, either. As a result, Chardonnay rewards repeat samplings, and that’s exactly what will be on your mind after you get so much as a whiff of this wine. It may go under different names (usually taking the name of a region, like Burgundy), but the experience is authentic and unique, so even inexperienced wine-lovers will realize what it is within a sip or two.

2017 aubert chardonnay powder house California White

The first vintage of this wine, the 2017 Chardonnay Powder House comes from eight acres of what are now estate-owned vines planted in 2013, to Hyde Old Wente and Mt. Eden clones on Goldridge soils. The vineyard is located in downtown Forestville, right across from the high school. At 15.4% alcohol, like Aubert’s other single-vineyard, singular Chardonnays, this baby is no shrinking violet. Although it is a little youthfully closed to begin, it unwinds with coaxing to offer glimpses at baked apple, poached pears, peach preserves and pineapple upside-down cake plus hints of praline, crème brûlée and clover honey. Full-bodied, the palate features a wicked backbone of freshness, beautifully lifting all those concentrated, densely packed flavors, finishing very long and wonderfully pure.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97+ RPIntense matchstick and flint with dried-apple and peach undertones. Full-bodied with great fruit, a chewy palate and a juicy finish. Lime and lemon undertones to the ripe fruit. Drink or hold.James Suckling | 97 JSThe 2017 Chardonnay Powder House Vineyard is bright, punchy and full of life. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and almond all race out of this plush yet vibrant Chardonnay. There is so much to like in this striking, delineated Chardonnay. The Powder House is the one wine in this tasting that is far showier from bottle than it was from tank. It is also the most approachable of the 2017 Chardonnays. For that reason, I would choose to drink it ahead of the other Chardonnays in the range.Antonio Galloni | 95 AGA big, rich and fruity style, featuring apple and peach pastry flavors that offer some savory accents. The broad finish shows plenty of oak, with red berry hints. Drink now through 2023. 777 cases made.Wine Spectator | 92 WS

2019 aubert chardonnay powder house California White

A relatively new vineyard label for Aubert (the third vintage to be produced), the 2019 Chardonnay Powder House comes from eight acres of what are now estate-owned vines planted in 2013 to Hyde Old Wente and Mt. Eden clones on Goldridge soils. It prances out of the glass with showy scents of fresh nectarines, pink grapefruit, lime leaves and preserved lemons plus hints of struck flint and wet pebbles. The full-bodied palate possesses an almost electric intensity with bags of nervy citrusy flavors and a very lively backbone, finishing with great length and oodles of minerals. This should age fantastically!Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97-99 RPThe 2019 Chardonnay Powder House, from a site in Forestville, is one of the most lifted, gracious wines in the range. White flowers, mint, orchard fruit and white pepper give the Powder House its distinctly brilliant aromatics. It is an especially translucent, taut Chardonnay within this hugely impressive range.Antonio Galloni | 95-97 AGAromas of stone fruit, baked lemon, dried flowers, jasmine tea and baking spice. Full-bodied with a well-grounded, savory palate of baked citrus, nutmeg and dried lily. A charming note of chamomile, too. Earthy, herbaceous finish. Just lovely. Drink or hold.James Suckling | 97 JSRich and well-defined apple pastry and dried apricot flavors show notes of tangerine, with hints of toasted coconut. The luscious and well-spiced finish has creamy accents.Wine Spectator | 94 WS

The 2020 Chardonnay Powder House is ethereal and gracious in feel. Effusive aromatics give the Powder House its lifted personality. 2020 aubert larry hyde & sons vineyard chardonnay California White

A cool, late-harvest site relative to Aubert’s other sources, the 2020 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons also sees a bit less new French oak (50%). Readers will note that the oak made virtually no impression on me, as the wine bursts with aromas of ripe, honeyed melon, balanced by bright lime notes. Full-bodied, creamy and lush on the palate, this is just a pleasure to drink, finishing long and zesty.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RPThis stunning version opens with a rich impression, with candied ginger, marmalade and honeyed overtones to the core of fresh fruit flavors, including notes of pear, apple, melon and citrus. Hints of orange blossoms and minerality mingle with fresh acidity, while a nutmeg-dominant wave of spices gain momentum on the long finish. Drink now through 2033. 1,538 cases made.Wine Spectator | 96 WSA big and juicy white with cooked apple, pear, honey, and mineral. Flint. Full and layered with a flavorful and delicious finish. 2021 aubert chardonnay powder house California White

Floral, non-fruity hints of crushed stone and talcum powder appear on the nose of Aubert’s 2021 Chardonnay Powder House, creating an attractive counterpoint to the wine’s honeyed richness and intense white-peach notes. Full-bodied and silky in feel, it’s a bit custardy in texture yet lithe, graceful and long, with an almost mentholated finish. There are 2,000 cases this vintage, from a Forestville vineyard planted in 2015 mainly to Hyde Old Wente, plus a bit of Mount Eden.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95-97 RPLove the aromas of lemon-lime, gunpowder, kiwi, and dried lemons. It’s full, phenolic and solid. This is like red wine in structure. Long and persistent. One for the cellar. Give this some time. Best after 2025.James Suckling | 97 JSThe 2021 Chardonnay Powder House is elegant, polished and also a touch reticent. That won’t be an issue in time, but the Powder House is decidedly reticent today. Strong mineral accents are front and center, while the fruit feels pushed into the background. Mark Aubert’s Chardonnays have historically aged quite well. I expect that will be the case here as well.Vinous Media | 94-96 VM
