France Wines

Words fail us when trying to adequately portray France’s place in the world of wine. It’s downright impossible to imagine what wine would feel and taste like had it not been for France’s many, many viticultural pioneers. Fine wine is the blood of France’s vigorously beating heart, and it finds itself in many aspects of French culture. With a viticultural history that dates all the way back to the 6th century BC, France now enjoys its position as the most famous and reputable wine region on the planet. If you have a burning passion for masterfully crafted, mouth-watering, mind-expanding wines, then regular visits to France are probably already in your schedule, and for a good reason.

2022 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Clos de la Maltroie

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Clos de la Maltroie 1er Cru is actually more backward on the nose compared to the Village Cru, tightly coiled with mineral-driven, malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with neatly integrated oak on the entry. Fresh and saline, there’s ample grip toward the finish, with just a touch of grilled walnut and fine length. Excellent. Tasted at merchants’ 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.Vinous Media | 93 VMAn attractive mid lemon. Slightly yellower fruit. Good acidity with a leaner style of fruit. Maltroie rarely shines in its youth, and this is again in the more austere style. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.Jasper Morris | 91 JM

2022 Joseph Drouhin Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc

Fresh light lemon colour. The bouquet indicates a little more flesh, as is typical, but not at the expense of precision. As always this is extraordinarily intense on the palate, not yet as fleshy as it will become, but one can see into the future. Fine fruit and acid balance too, of course. 13.7% alcohol which makes sense for Clos des Mouches. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.Jasper Morris | 93-96 JMAromas of buttered orchard fruit, orange blossom, baking spices and toasted nuts introduce the 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc (Domaine), with a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny palate that’s fleshy and layered while retaining nice tension and cut. The Drouhin’s seven hectares of Chardonnay in this premier cru were harvested over 15 days.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92-94 RPA deft application of wood frames the more elegant nose of white-fleshed fruit, citrus, acacia and crushed anise hints. The rich, generous and vibrant middleweight flavors are supported by bright citrus-tinged acidity on the sneaky long, dry and balanced finale. This is also lovely and a wine that could be enjoyed young or aged successfully for up to a decade.Burghound | 92 BHThe 2022 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc 1er Cru had been racked into tank a fortnight earlier. It will cohere on the nose, but it already shows much promise: citrus fruit and orange pith, subtle touches of beeswax and white flowers. The medium-bodied palate has a fine definition and the best acidity of the whites I tasted, with fine tension on the finish. This should age well in bottle.Vinous Media | 91-93 VM
