Galicia Wines

"Initially set in motion by Romans and very much continued today, the winemaking tradition in Galicia is long and rich. The sheer amount of time spent carefully tending to these vineyards, learning and adjusting strategies of growing bountiful vintages and producing wine warrants respect even from those who don’t consider themselves wine enthusiasts. Those who do, however, have that much more to discover and fall in love with in Galicia.

Its position by the Atlantic, steep cliffs, rolling hills, and rivers all seem to be coated in lush verdure, earning the region its title as the Spanish green corner. Vineyards can be found mostly alongside the river Mino in the cool, wet yet sunny climate characteristic to Galicia. The grapes grown here include Albarino, Torrontes, Godello, Loureiro and more. They are predominantly made into crisp, light, opulent white wines (Rias Baixas) remarkably similar to Portuguese Vinho Verde. Due to the challenging terroir, red grapes generally struggle to grow in Galicia and only the warmest, sunniest parts of this region produce red wines, typically of a light and fragrant character. Though not as famous, these enigmatic elixirs tell a compelling story and offer a unique perspective into Galician culture and way of life. "

2022 Pazo Senorans Albarino

Pretty peach and honey scents seduce. Really briney with peach juice, lovely richness: a great example of Albariño. Puts you on assured footing of place. The palate is steely – classically so. Lemon purity and salty stoniness are very appetising and tangy. Nominated by Fiona Beckett.Decanter | 93 DECThe 2022 Albariño is from granite soils in the Salnés Valley. It shows varietal character, freshly cut grass, white flowers and fruit and the roundness of the year, with 13.5% alcohol and balancing acidity. This is bottled after four to five months with lees. It has the Señorans signature. 192,000 bottles were produced.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 91 RP

2022 Coto de Gomariz X Albarino

The varietal Albariño 2022 X, which contains some 5% Treixadura, was produced with grapes from schist and granite soils. It has a nose of dry herbs and a Mediterranean feeling to it, perhaps from the warmer year. The palate has depth and personality, nice texture and a long aftertaste. 7,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in May 2023.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92+ RPRicardo Carreiro’s Gomariz X bottling is made from a blend of ninety-five percent Albariño and five percent Treixadura. The wine is deep and complex, offering up a fine bouquet of tart orange, limepeel, a touch of menthol, stony minerality, dried flowers and a touch of lemongrass in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a rock solid core of fruit, fine mineral undertow and grip, a lovely spine of acidity and a long, well balanced and vibrant finish. In Ribeiro, blends of Albariño and Treixadura are usually weighted in the Treixadura direction, with Albariño playing a supporting role in the cuvée. It is fascinating to taste and example where the inverse is true. This is a lovely bottle. (Drink between 2024 - 2032)John Gilman | 92 JG
