Mouton Rothschild

Mouton Rothschild

Mouton Rothschild

If you are looking for exciting, rich and decadent red wines, look no further than Château Mouton Rothschild. Like the owner himself, Baron Philippe Rothschild, these wines are not shy and retiring, but rather flamboyant, extravagant, spicy, and full of personality and decadence. Rather than novices and casual drinkers, Mouton best fits hedonists and sensualists who enjoy every moment of their life to the fullest. Mouton was the highest-rated of all the French wines in the famous 1976 “Judgment of Paris” blind tasting, and it’s nowadays considered not only one of the best Bordeaux wineries in France but indeed in the entire world.

How can we accurately describe the taste and exciting aromas of these bold, high-quality red wines? The vin de pays were best depicted by Ian D’Agata, one of the leading experts in Italian wine, as well as wines from Alsace, Bordeaux and Canada, who among other, said Mouton is “opulent, luscious and rich, multi-layered and complex… Rich and ripe but marvelously precise and light on its feet.”

The Château Mouton Rothschild estate includes 205 acres of vines at Pauillac planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (11%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%), and it has been used for cultivating vineyards since the early middle ages. The Premier Cru Classé from the Bordeaux region has been the center of the wine business and technical innovations since the early 20th century. It’s unique winemaking process that focuses on preserving the integrity of the grape, and marries tradition with technology, continues to be an influence on winemaking processes around the world to the present day.

2007 Le Petit Mouton

As with Les Forts de Latour, this puts on a show. Petit Mouton is resplendent with crème caramel and damson notes rather than coffee grounds however, and is a generous, graceful wine. So succulent, with a full 76% of well-ripened Cabernet Sauvignon – don’t tell me you couldn’t sink right into a bottle of this and go for it. Maybe the wine of the tasting for drinking today.Decanter | 92 DEC

2007 Mouton Rothschild

It was during lockdown that I really started to discover how well the 2007 vintage is tasting right now, and it was to celebrate a post-lockdown reunion with old friends that I first opened this wine in 2020. Tasting it again a few months later and it still jumps out of the glass with its seductively rich texture and spiralling aromatics, clearly showing how the best estates casually step over vintage limitations. The texture is strikingly rich, and as it opens in the glass with blackberry, cassis, slate and notes of chocolate shavings opening up even further. This has a long life ahead. Drinking Window 2020 - 2042.Decanter | 96 DECThe wood element is important here, but it is based on a firm Cabernet Sauvignon structure, dry but rich tannins. The wine is a great success for the vintage, giving sweetness, ripe fruit that only shows light extraction, and dark plum and berry flavors. The feeling is of polished fruit and wood, rounded but always dense.Wine Enthusiast | 95 WEThe 2007 Mouton Rothschild is a gorgeous wine, especially within the context of the vintage. Open, expressive aromatics and forward fruit make the 2007 an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next two decades or so. Although the 2007 is not an epic Mouton, it is without question one of the best recent vintages for current drinking. Smoke, tobacco, cedar and licorice add the closing shades of nuance. Warm weather resulted in an unusually early start to the growing season. Summer was not especially warm, but a hot, dry September pushed the raisins through the final phase of ripening. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot. Harvest took place between September 26 and October 11.Antonio Galloni | 94 AGThis Mouton is starting to show the complexity of an aged Mouton with truffles, dried strawberries and cherries. Full body, firm tannins and flavors of sous bois and mushrooms, which make this really quite sexy. Better in a year or two but so complete now.James Suckling | 94 JSA prime example of a lesser year hitting its stride, as 2007 was markedly cooler than normal after June. This is very expressive, with perfumy black tea, singed alder and smoldering tobacco notes leading the way for a core of gently mulled plum and black cherry fruit. Shows pretty cedar accents through the finish, with a menthol backdrop.--Non-blind Mouton-Rothschild vertical (March 2017). Drink now through 2031.Wine Spectator | 93 WSComposed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the deep purple-colored 2007 Mouton reveals sweet aromas of creme de cassis, subtle oak, and flowers. Medium to full-bodied and elegant with sweet tannin as well as flavors and a texture that build incrementally on the palate, this strong effort should evolve over the next 15 years.Robert Parker | 92 RPBased on 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, the 2007 Château Mouton Rothschild is a touch firm and austere, yet nevertheless concentrated and structured, with solid balance. Classic notes of blackcurrants, graphite, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil all emerge from this still youthful, medium to full-bodied effort that’s just now on the early slopes of its maturity plateau. It’s not a blockbuster, sexy Mouton by any measure and will need to be purchased by those who love more reserved, classically styled Bordeaux.Jeb Dunnuck | 90 JD
