Nuits Saint Georges Wines

The wind in Nuits-Saint-Georges carries the endless fragrance of the green-covered slopes, as well as the cheerful countryside chatter of the townsfolk. Everything about this place exudes a nostalgic aura, a feeling of proximity to a bygone age, in spirit if nothing else. Towards the north, you find elegant, fruit-forward wines, almost intoxicating from the smell alone. Towards the south, rich and thunderous bottles brimming with aging potential. Centuries of winemaking excellence have propelled the region to an influential and revered position on the market, not unlike its neighbor Vosne-Romanée. If you have any plans to visit Burgundy, this is one town you don’t want to skip.

The region contains forty premier crus, and it can be hard to find readily available bottles, as their demand slowly increases, along with their popularity. For the entrepreneurial wine lover, a place like this is a goldmine. Whenever Burgundy’s reputable subregions are discussed in detail, comparisons are always made to this appellation. The reds are powerful, striking, intense on the attack, and complex when their textures are examined. Notes of game, truffle, leather, and earth complement the standard (but not mundane) berry-infused composition perfectly, creating a balanced and rich drinking experience. The whites of Nuits-Saint-Georges are firm, elegant, and refreshing, with strong notes of white flower, honey, and brioche.

Once the wine is opened, it’s incredibly hard to stop. It stimulates both the palate and the mind, with each sip beckoning the next until you’re left surprised that an hour has gone by without you noticing. Get in while you still can!

2017 Emmanuel Rouget Nuits Saint Georges, Burgundy Red

Showing a deeper colour than the other wines in his cellar, as it always seems to do, this serious, well-structured Nuits from Emmanuel Rouget shows bramble and black cherry fruits, some subtle oak spice, vivacious acidity and good underlying grip.Decanter | 92 DECThe 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village, matured in 30% new oak in order to preserve freshness, according to Rouget, has quite a generous bouquet of blueberry and black cherry fruit, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is bright and fresh with violet-tinged blue fruit, almost Vosne-like in style, leading to a silky-smooth, very classy finish. Excellent.Vinous Media | 90-92 VMThe 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges Village exhibits aromas of sweet Morello cherries, cassis, violets and rose petals. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and expressive, with a layered core and fine stony tannins, combining richness of structure, with lightness of touch.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 89-91 RPThis is at once more deeply colored and more deeply pitched with its fresh and restrained nose of plum, dark currant, violet and newly turned earth. There is notably better concentration to the muscular and punchy medium-bodied flavors that flash a mild rusticity on the mouth coating though not particularly austere finale. This well-made effort is very Nuits in character and should age well over the mid-term.Burghound | 89-91 BHFrom the northern side of Nuits, in Les Lavières and Argillats. The colour is a rich imperial purple but with a little bit of reduction. More masculine in this vintage, says Emmanuel. Pretty powerful on the nose, but nutty too. Ultra- intense even at the back of the palate, this one has rolled up its sleeves and settled in for a long evening. If you are happy with the power, this could be your wine. Tasted: November 2020.Jasper Morris | 89-92 JM

2022 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits Saint Georges Premier Cru Les Chaignots

The 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers is unusually supple and suave for this site, offering up aromas of dark berries, orange zest, peonies, vine smoke and grilled squab, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety palate with lively acids, sweet tannins and a saline finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92-93 RPThis is aromatically similar to the Perrières with perhaps just a touch more sauvage character in evidence. The powerful if slightly less concentrated flavors pack first-rate punch on the moderately austere, vibrant and compact finale that is also built to repay longer-term cellaring, indeed 20 years would not be a surprise.Burghound | 92-94 BHDense youthful purple, with an exceptionally youthful bouquet in concentrated fresh raspberry mode, vivid but plentiful tannins and good acidity excellent tension - this one always needs time says Bertrand. Drink from 2031-2039. Tasted Nov 2023.Jasper Morris | 92-95 JMThe 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, with background touches of wild mint and menthol, quite ripe and opulent. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent opening. Again, overtly fruit-driven with a sorbet-fresh finish. Maybe it needs a little more finesse and Pinoté to develop in barrel? Give it three or four years.Vinous Media | 91-93 VM
