Pomerol Wine

Pomerol is an area with a viticultural history that spans all the way to Roman times, even though their recognition as one of the most successful and important Bordeaux appellations happened quite recently. They’re completely dedicated to producing divine reds, wines that could easily fit in Dionysus’ personal cellar, standing proud among the finest bottles ever created. Interestingly, the region was originally known for producing delicious whites, but they have since completely altered their course.

The soil of this region boasts a healthy amount of diversity, with a primary composition of sand, clay and gravel. The closer you get to the border with Saint-Émilion, the more clay you encounter, whereas the southern and western areas are lighter, with more gravel presence. Merlot is the dominant varietal in Pomerol, which creates a stark contrast between their wines and those of the Medoc. The characteristic flavors include plum and prune, but depending on the estate and the soil they have to work with, you can notice delicious undertones of chocolate, raisins, peppermint and honeyed spice. Because of this, Pomerol reds are especially appealing to those with a bit of a sweet tooth.

As a well-established wine retailer, it is our goal to bring you closer to some of the finest wines this region has ever produced, so that your tastebuds may experience a whole new dimension of wine complexity and flavor. These wines can appease even the most demanding purists while bringing a unique and playful aromatic mixture to the table, ready to be shared with the people that make your life that much better.

2015 vieux chateau certan Bordeaux Red

The 2015 Vieux Château Certan is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel. Rich, sumptuous and explosive in the glass, the 2015 is pure class. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this sumptuous, spectacularly ripe Pomerol. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender, licorice and menthol all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s textural richness and intensity that stand out most. As good as the 2015 is today, it is going to need at least 15-20 years to be at its very best. Is there anything more I can ask of the 2015? No, there is not. This is a tremendous showing.Antonio Galloni | 100 AGI was able to taste both the 2015 and 2016 grand vins, and these are heavenly, magical wines that could not be any better. Starting with the 2015 Vieux Château Certan, it shows the opulent, flamboyant style of the vintage to a T and reveals a saturated purple/ruby color, a monster bouquet of blackberries, tobacco, kirsch, dried spices, and loamy earth, full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. A thrill a minute, wine doesn’t get any better, and I only wish every reader could taste this beauty. Drink it any time over the coming 30 years or more.Jeb Dunnuck | 100 JDThe blackberries, blueberries, oyster shell and violets are so mesmerizing. Full-bodied, focused and deep. It takes you to another space and plane. Dried flowers and dark fruit. The tannins are perfectly crafted. Keeps going as you taste it. Drink in 2023 but why wait?James Suckling | 100 JSBlended of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Vieux Chateau Certan opens with profound notes of blueberry compote, dried mulberries, black forest cake, licorice, violets and garrigue with wafts of black truffles, sandalwood and rose hips. Medium to full-bodied, very earthy/savory and beautifully layered with very plush yet present tannins, it offers lovely freshness and a very long minerally finish. So very Pomerol!Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 98+ RPThis is a beautifully fragrant wine that has power along with an elegant acidity. It has wonderful juiciness that cuts through any of the tannins to give great freshness, a silky texture and fruitiness at the end. Perfumed and stylish, this is a very fine wine.Wine Enthusiast | 98 WEExpressive and alluring aromas of warm plum reduction and boysenberry puree lead off here, followed by fleshy, seamlessly layered notes of blackberry, black currant, melted black licorice and smoldering tobacco. Shows a lovely tug of dark earth through the finish without sacrificing a sense of polish or giving ground to the waves of fruit. Displays terrific latent energy through the finish. Best from 2023 through 2040. 3,750 cases made.Wine Spectator | 97 WSAromatics here are a little more evolved than with the 2016, showing tar notes, Liquorice Allsorts, anise, raspberry and blackberry fruits. This is a good quality wine with impact and character and the subtle complex shades of flavour that VCC does so well. Really does need time in the glass, suggesting it will hit full stride in another two or three years. (Drink between 2023-2042)Decanter | 95 DEC

2016 trotanoy Bordeaux Red

(Château Trotanoy, Pomerol, Red) An amazing wine packed full of concentrated, well-measured brambly hedgerow fruits, slate and bitter chocolate. It has a complexity at its centre that builds outwards through the palate, with a ball of dark cassis that gathers pace and stretches out its muscles. You don’t feel the slightest trace of heat here, despite the warmth of the summer, and it seems clear that maturity was reached slowly but surely. The texture is silky smooth, the overall feel confident and powerful and very Trotanoy. Every time I taste this wine it impresses me more.Decanter | 100 DECComposed of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Trotanoy is characteristically a little closed at this youthful stage, slowly unfurling to reveal compelling notions of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with touches of pencil lead, crushed rocks, underbrush and chargrill plus a fragrant waft of star anise. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and invigorating freshness supporting the densely packed, muscular fruits, finishing very long and mineral laced.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 99 RPA structured, powerful wine, the 2016 Château Trotanoy checks in as 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from one of the great sites in Pomerol, a 7-hectare vineyard located on gravelly, black clay soils. This ruby/purple-hued effort gives up a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberry and black raspberry fruits intermixed with loads of iron and crushed rock-like minerality, smoke tobacco, and graphite. It’s deep, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, with sensational purity of fruit and balance as well as building tannins and structure. It’s built for the long haul and needs a solid 7-8 years of bottle age, but it will keep for 3 decades or more.Jeb Dunnuck | 99 JDTrotanoy is quite simply one of the wines of 2016. Outrageously beautiful, deep and resonant, Trotanoy captures all the best the vintage has to offer. Super-ripe dark red and purplish berry fruit races across the palate. The firm, broad Trotanoy tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. The 2016 is an epic wine in the making. Don’t miss it.Antonio Galloni | 98 AGThere’s decadence and complexity to this young wine, which offers spellbinding dark fruit. But there are also wild mushrooms, sandalwood, blackberries and violets on the nose, not to mention black olives. Full bodied, very deep and layered. Powerful finish. Drink after 2025.James Suckling | 98 JSA brick house, this packs in warm fig, red and black currant paste and bitter cherry compote flavors along with smoldering tobacco, singed alder and graphite notes. The finish is quite dark, with an echo of Turkish coffee lingering after the fruit finally ebbs. Among the most backward wines of the vintage. Best from 2023 through 2040. 1,450 cases made.Wine Spectator | 96 WSThis big, bold wine offers massive tannins and rich fruits. Dense and concentrated, it has power and ripe fruits that are balanced by acidity. It will develop impressively and be ready to drink from 2025.Wine Enthusiast | 96 WE
