This wine appears to be on steroids. The color is a dense opaque purple. The bouquet offers up notes of chocolate, espresso beans, smoke, iron, earth, and copious quantities of black jammy fruit. Thick, intense, succulent, full-bodied, and powerful, it remains 7-8 years away from full maturity. It should last 30+ years. An amazing accomplishment, the 1982 La Tour-Haut-Brion is the last profound wine produced at this estate. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030. Remains just this side of roasted, thanks to sound acids and a medicinal note of menthol. Thick and impressive wine, finishing firm and gripping, with solid, ripe tannins. ((Domaine Château de La Tour Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Red) By contrast to the regular cuvee where aggressive swirling quickly dissipated the reduction, here that didn't help enough to reveal the underlying fruit. On the palate though there is noticeably better size, weight and concentration to the bigger-bodied flavors that possess a highly seductive mid-palate texture thanks to the abundant dry extract that buffers the markedly firm tannic spine shaping the serious, austere and borderline chewy finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is impressive though I underscore that my rating is of course contingent on the nose eventually cleaning up with age. (Drink starting 2037)Burghound | 96 BHThe 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes is very promising, unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berry fruit, orange peel, rose petals, rich soil tones and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and concentrated, with rich, powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, resonant finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94-96 RP
