Dried strawberry with some cherry, nutmeg and spice. Some dried meat, too. Full-bodied, chewy and rich with integration and focus. The tannins are really put together beautifully. Long and intense. Tight at the end. This needs at least four or five years to open. Try after 2025.James Suckling | 99 JSThe 2017 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata is a pleasant, easygoing Barolo from Roberto Voerzio. Lifted, perfumed Rocche aromatics meld into a core of crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, blood orange and spice. The 2017 is a bit more nervy than most vintages, but the brisk tannins help convey a measure of freshness that is quite welcome in this vintage. A level of ripeness and structure not seen in any 2018 Barolos, with ripe-strawberry, cedar and fresh-earth aromas and flavors. Full and expansive yet fine tannins and a fresh finish give this young red seductive sensibility. Very, very long. Best after 2026.James Suckling | 98 JSRoberto Voerzio manages the extremes of Cerequio - a southern exposition at the bottom and two more east-facing sites at the top of the MGA. This combination gives the 2018 a specific vibrancy - there is no garnet hue here. The aroma is soapy, with a cinnamon vibrancy, black pepper spice and plenty of pencil lead. This graphite note appears on the palate too, allied to ripe, creamy tannins, moderate yet good acidity and a refreshing, polished finish.
