Top Rated Barolo Wines

Italy’s food culture is one of the first things people associate with the country, and not without good reason. After all, some of the most ubiquitous dishes and meals in many kitchens are improvised versions of popular Italian food. And where there’s good food, you will always find good wine. Take a journey to Piedmont, and you will find one of the most intense, most recognizable wines on the planet. There’s no Barolo without Italy, and, some would argue, no Italy without Barolo.

You can always recognize a Barolo by its potent, sharp acidity and rich, full-bodied nature. Aromatics and flavors tend to include dried rose petals, tar, and expressive fruit. Like any great wine, Barolo comes in many styles, as the terroir of the region is not the same everywhere. This gives an adventurous appeal to each bottle of Barolo, as you get intimate with a producer’s unique style and take on this Italian classic. It’s never “just a Barolo,” it’s always “this special Barolo.” Every sampling brings something new, and you can never get bored.

Another characteristic of a Barolo done right is staggering aging potential, which, when combined with very affordable prices, makes the wine a joy to collect and drink. Serve it with a large feast or a platter of fine cheese – it’s up to you. Alternatively, hold off for a decade or so, and experience an entirely different flavor package. A good Barolo knows no generational gaps or language barriers and will send your guests soaring towards the stars.

2019 oddero barolo Piedmont Red

The 2019 Barolo opens to a lean appearance with a very vibrant Nebbiolo color that shines with dark ruby highlights. There is dried cherry and candied fruit aromas on the bouquet. Those fruit layers cede to light spice, lilac and campfire ash. The beauty in this wine is the extreme balance achieved in this classic vintage. It delivers on all levels: intensity, length and joy. The fruit represents a blend of four MGS sites: Bricco Chiesa and Capalot in La Morra, Fiasco in Castiglione Falletto and Monvigliero in Verduno. Production is an ample 32,000 bottles.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPViolet, strawberry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are chewy and firm. Medium in body, with captivating inner perfume, the 2019 is sensual and inviting right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and rose petal appear later, adding layers of nuance. All the elements are impeccably balanced throughout. What a total delight this is.Vinous Media | 91 VM

2019 oddero barolo villero Barolo

With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the 2019 Barolo Villero is graceful and light with a beautifully silky approach to the palate. It is pleasing to the eye, thanks to the shiny ruby color that is characteristic of this vintage, and to the nose, thanks to a graceful bouquet with redcurrant, spice and blue flower. It shows similar traits to the mouth, thanks to a very sharp or linear element. Oddero’s Villero knocks it out of the park across this portfolio of new releases. This is a 6,000-bottle production.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RPFrom 1.44 hectares of 53-year-old vines with a southeast exposure, this wine is traditionally handled and aged for 30 months in large oak vessels. Intense intoxicating floral rose and violet aromas are soaked in red cherry and incense flavours, with pot pourri depth supported by a firm structure. The attack is velvety, the acidity refreshing and integrated. There’s a lot of substance here but with great integration, which results in a tight-knit finish wrapped up in a a bitter orange aftertaste. A classic.Decanter | 95 DECLove the aromas of freshly sliced strawberries with lemon bush and hibiscus that follow through to a medium body with fine and chewy tannins, and a fresh and focused finish. A linear and poised young Barolo. Drink after 2027.James Suckling | 95 JSBalsamic aromas recalling eucalyptus and menthol mingle with rose, violet, forest floor and tobacco on this fragrant, full-bodied red. Tightly knit with youthful intensity, the structured palate palate also shows great elegance, delivering ripe red cherry, spiced cranberry, licorice and a hint of coffee bean set against a backbone of firm, close-grained tannins. It’s still rather austere so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2029–2049. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe | 95 KOThe 2019 Barolo Villero is a powerful, classically austere young Barolo. Then again, that is Villero. Bright acids and clean mineral underpinnings give the 2019 striking energy. Spice, dried flowers, mint, crushed rocks, cranberry and pine all build with a bit of time in the glass. I very much admire the precision here, but the Villero clearly needs time. The only question is how much.Vinous Media | 94 VM
