The 2018 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons was of the last vineyards picked, in mid-September. This section of Hyde vineyard is located on the Napa side of Carneros and is planted to Corton-Charlemagne clone on St. George rootstock. It strides confidently out of the glass with a very serious nose of baked apples, pear tart, almond croissant and candied ginger with wafts of struck flint and sea spray. The full-bodied palate is impactful and yet achingly elegant, featuring loads of mineral sparks coming off the apple and pear flavors, delivering a long, satisfying, almond-laced finish. A cool, late-harvest site relative to Aubert’s other sources, the 2020 Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons also sees a bit less new French oak (50%). Readers will note that the oak made virtually no impression on me, as the wine bursts with aromas of ripe, honeyed melon, balanced by bright lime notes. The 2021 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard needs a little shaking before it prances out with showy notes of fresh apricots, Golden Delicious apples, and ginger ale, followed by hints of honeysuckle, nutmeg, and lime cordial. The full-bodied palate is super intense with concentrated citrus, stone fruit, and gingery layers, supported by an amazing backbone of freshness and a silken texture, finishing especially long and minerally.
