Grenache Wines

Spain is one of the most notable wine-producing countries in the world, and Grenache bottles serve as a good indicator as to why this is the case. The varietal requires dry and hot climate conditions since it ripens later than most, and it handles drought and wind with ease; as a result, it can be found mainly in southern France, Spain, Sardinia, Australia, and San Joaquin Valley. Grenache can be found in many wine blends because the grape adds a lot of body and a rich, fruitful taste that can be spotted easily. Imagine a thick, decadent syrup, with strong strawberry and raspberry notes and a backdrop of playful cinnamon, with some white pepper adding intrigue to the mix.

One of the most notable characteristics of Grenache wines is the high alcohol content, soaring as high as 15% - enough to lift you from reality, if for but a brief moment or two. While most Grenache wines aren’t made to spend a decade in your cellar, some estates create some excellent low-yield wines that develop nuance and character over time, making them a great addition to your collection – especially if you like a grounding, leathery baseline in your favorite wines. The layers of structure and flavor inspire as much thought as it took to develop the wine itself, and you can enjoy it for years to come.

2019 Espectacle del Montsant

It’s always an exciting moment tasting a new vintage of the wine from one of the most beautiful vineyards in Montsant, and the 2019 Espectacle del Montsant didn’t disappoint. It’s always Mediterranean, heady and ripe, decadent and hedonistic. 2019 was a warm and quite classical vintage in the zone, with good ripeness (the wine’s label lists 15.5% alcohol), and the wine is hedonistic, nuanced and complex, with very good acidity, which is one of the characteristics that makes this vintage so complete. Despite everything, the wine is medium to full-bodied and comes through as perfumed and ethereal. They do long macerations and long aging in foudre. 2019 is a very serious vintage for this wine; it’s a little closed and needs time in the glass, and it’s tight and seamless, a little austere for what this wine usually is. This is truly spectacular. 6,500 bottles produced.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 99 RP

2019 altovinum evodia garnacha Spain Red

Based on 100% Garnacha, the 2019 Evodia is a killer value that delivers incredible Garnacha flair at a crazy good price. Kirsch, blackberry, acacia flower, violet, and sandalwood notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, beautifully layered wine with fabulous tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is the finest wine at this price point in the world.Jeb Dunnuck | 93 JDThe 2019 Evodia is pure Garnacha from old head-pruned vines in the Sierra Santa Cruz in Calatayud. It fermented with around 20% full clusters in concrete and matured mostly in concrete with just 20% of the blend put in used oak barrels for three months. There is a component that matured in concrete egg that I was able to taste separately that seems to bring a touch of freshness to the final blend, something welcomed in a warm year like 2019, which seems like a fresher version of 2017, when the wines achieved quite good ripeness. The nose opens up nicely in the glass and is quite aromatic and floral, exuberant, with a heady touch of ripe fruit. It’s young and tasty, tender and pleasant to drink, with a forward personality. A real bargain. I hope there are more wines like this in Aragon, where the wealth of Garnacha vineyards would make it possible quite easily. 150,000 bottles produced. There are two batches per year. What I tasted had been bottled in February 2020, just a few days before I sampled it.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 90+ RP

2019 vinedos del jorco las cabanuelas cebreros Spain Red

The entry-level red 2019 Las Cabañuelas is a surprise. They looked for freshness through blending different vineyards. It’s 13.5% alcohol, aromatic, floral and expressive with some herbal hints. This has more tannin than the 2018, and the tannic structure is quite serious; there’s also vibrant acidity and a long, tasty, almost salty finish. This is a bargain; it really over-delivers. 7,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 91 RP
