Provence Wines

"There are few countries that could be decent rivals to France when it comes to wines. It seems that French winemakers simply can’t go wrong when magically turning grapes into a spellbinding drink that makes all of us sigh in a state of total bliss. Provence is located in southeastern France and represents a meeting point for many cultures and people that each introduced at least one grape variety to the region. This is why today Provence is home to a large number of varieties and, therefore, a spectacular palette of most delicious wines, among which the most popular is probably rosé.

Every subregion and appellation have their own hallmark that makes them unique and recognized, although Mourvedre is the most commonly cultivated across the whole Provence. Many of them also plant Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah varieties, often used in blends with other, lesser-known grapes, such as Braquet. These varieties are usually cultivated by more traditional winemakers who want to keep the typical French notes instead of following the trends. As for the lovely, full-bodied white wines typical for Provence, they’re mostly made of Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc and others. Wines like Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose and d’Esclans Cotes de Provence Whispering Angel Rose are perfect souvenirs to take home after a trip to this French wine region. "

2021 Domaine Tempier Bandol Blanc

Primarily Clairette (60%) and Ugni Blanc (30%), with bits of Bourboulenc, Marsanne and Rolle, the 2021 Bandol Blanc was still in tank when I visited early last year. It presents a striking juxtaposition of ripe pears and honeyed richness with brighter notes of fresh lime juice on the nose and medium-bodied palate, finishing with a sense of plush richness balanced by mouthwatering citrus zest and brine.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92-94 RPWith a higher percentage of Ugni Blanc and 10 months in foudres, this has less overt tropical fruit and more restraint. The closed nose opens to white peaches, melon and delicate tropical fruit with a hint of fresh greenness and white nuts. Citrus-pith-tight acidity gives a mouthwatering finish with a touch of chalky phenolics and smoky notes on the finish. Delicate, elegant and beautiful with an intense structure, this is still very youthful with the potential to open up with some age.Decanter | 92 DEC

2021 domaine tempier bandol rose Rose

Not included in the blind tasting at the local syndicat, Tempier’s 2021 Bandol Rose nevertheless looked good when I tasted it at the estate. It’s a very fine, elegant example of Bandol rosé, with notes of passion fruit and pink grapefruit leading the way in a tightly knit, medium-bodied package that adds promising hints of white peach and anise on the lingering finish.Robert Parker | 93 RP

2022 domaine tempier bandol rose Rose

A classic Bandol, the 2022 Bandol Rose reveals stunning aromas of grapefruit, spring flowers, guava, lemon and iodine. The wine on the palate is medium to full-bodied, combining a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids with impressive substance on the finish. It needs a couple of years in bottle, but you can already see the potential.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 93 RP
