Red Wines

Very few things on this planet are as gorgeous as a healthy pour of red wine, swirling vivaciously inside the walls of your glass. This crimson nectar has followed humanity for centuries and millennia, stealing the breaths of any man and woman with a taste developed enough to appreciate it. In more ways than one, red wine has been the lifeblood of every wine-producing region, the cornerstone upon which entire estates are built. A single glass of crisp, delicious wine is enough to convert almost anyone into a lifelong aficionado.

There are as many red wine varieties as there are flavor combinations you can imagine, and this makes it relatively easy to find a bottle or ten that fit your preference. Each blend has its own unique identity, and a conversation in the form of sampling will tell you its history, taste, texture, and complexity. The finest red wines inspire long hours of thought, as you try to deconstruct the elaborate and mesmerizing experience you had, seemingly a mere moment ago. Each grape varietal brings character and a distinctive flavor to the mixture – a wine with plenty of Pinot Noir in it will have a soft, yet earthy taste, with traces of leather or tobacco, whereas a Zinfandel blend will be spicier, with delicate raspberry notes and often a higher alcohol content.

We’ve made it our goal to introduce you to the highest quality red wines in the world, as we would introduce two potential lovebirds to each other. Collecting fine wines is a long-term commitment, but much like a long-lived and stable romance, that commitment makes your life infinitely sweeter. Immerse yourself in the world of fine wine, and you will learn the true meaning of “living the moment.”

2016 la clotte Bordeaux Red

The 2016 La Clotte, part of the Vauthier family’s portfolio, was outstanding out of barrel, and now that it is in bottle, I have no reason to alter my view. The sophisticated, beautifully defined bouquet features mineral-rich black cherry and raspberry fruit; hints of violet and bay leaf emerge with time. The sublimely balanced palate is sensual and refined, offering a fine bead of acidity and a silky-smooth texture. The very persistent, refined finish is exceptional. This must surely be the hidden gem of Saint-Émilion in 2016. It’s just a shame that only 10,000 bottles were produced. Try to buy one.Vinous Media | 96 VMThe 2016 La Clotte is made up of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with a beautiful floral nose of violets and roses over a core of crushed cherries, black plums and blueberry compote plus hints of camphor and coffee beans. Medium to full-bodied, the palate features super ripe, wonderfully fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness seamlessly matching the delicate fruit nuances, leading to a very long, perfumed and classy finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPAn estate purchase by the team at Ausone in 2014, the 2016 Château La Clotte is a brilliant wine that delivers everything you could want from this vintage. Made from 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, its deep purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied, classic Saint-Emilion that has ultra-fine tannins, terrific balance, and a beautiful perfume of flowers, toasted bread, graphite, cassis, and black raspberries. Seemingly all about finesse and elegance, with flawless purity of fruit, it still packs plenty of intensity and length. It surpasses the 2015 and has 20-25 years of prime drinking ahead of it.Jeb Dunnuck | 95 JDVery attractive array of red fruit and brambly forest berries that lead to a very refined palate with super fine tannins and impressive freshness. So elegant. A blend of 85 per cent merlot, ten per cent cabernet sauvignon and five per cent cabernet franc. Try from 2022.James Suckling | 94 JSThis is a rich wine with bold tannins from a small property purchased in 2014 by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone. With its structure and density, the tannins show richly and the wine will develop with balance and style. Drink from 2023.Wine Enthusiast | 93 WEAn extremely precise, well-paced La Clotte vintage that shows the austerity of the property’s late-ripening terroir. The fruits are well brushed and the strands of flavour are clear: blackberries, slate, cold ash and wild flowers. 85% new oak. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.Decanter | 92 DEC
