Sangiovese

Sangiovese

Very Few Wines are as Purely Italian as Sangiovese.

This grape varietal is extremely uncommon outside of Italy, thriving only in specific locations in Argentina, Corsica, and the United States. The Italians are aware of this inherent advantage, and so this grape is among the highest planted varietals in the country.

Part of what makes Sangiovese so special is that the wine will differ in flavor based on where it was produced. In a way, sampling this wine is sampling a country, along with all its culture and traditions. Every winemaker worth their salt works to preserve the old ways, without excessive bottling manipulation and similar negative practices. The taste that is preserved through the old-fashioned method is simply divine. It’s hard to put into words how it feels to try a good-vintage Sangiovese (try 2004 if you’re impatient to taste this glorious drink, and 2010 if you’re willing to let it mature and build character). Everything comes together perfectly, in a way that might surprise some inexperienced wine enthusiasts. The flavors include lush and succulent strawberries and cherries, spicy oregano, and a sensual helping of dried rose. Depending on where it was made, you can encounter a whole host of other flavors, making it something of an adventure whenever you open a new bottle.

Some of the most notable brands associated with the Sangiovese grape varietal include Pertimalli, San Filippo, Casanova di Neri and Siro Pacenti and many more. All of them are worth trying at least once, and your collection will look stronger than ever once you own some of them.

2016 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia, Italy Red

Shows saturated flavors of black currant, blackberry, cherry, earth and a hint of dark chocolate embedded in the dense structure. Juicy and balanced in a sleek way, with the fruit persisting through the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2024 through 2042. 650 cases made, 100 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 96 WSUgolaia is a 1ha southeast-facing single vineyard. The terracotta-coloured soil is rich in marine fossils. After ageing in Slavonian oak botti for three years, the wine is finished in chestnut casks for six months, giving a polished wood sheen to the wine. Toothsome apricot, red plum and persimmon pervade the palate without weighing it down, the fruit offset by a pronounced mineral flintiness and accent of red liquorice. Layers of fine, powdery tannins keep its voluptuousness in check, as does underlying sneaky acidity.Decanter | 96 DECReally enticing aromas of black cherries, plums and flowers follow through to a full body with firm, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. I like the light austerity. Bark and fruit character at the end. Tight now. Give it at least three or four years to soften and come together. One of the best Ugolaias ever. Try after 2024.James Suckling | 95 JSThe Lisini 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolaia is focused and precise, and yet it also shows a layered and very generous display of dark blackberry fruit and summer ripe plum. It delivers good contouring with a frame of spice, cedar and sweet tobacco around a soft and supple core. However, if I describe this wine as rich and concentrated, I don’t want to get ahead of myself because, in fact, the end result is quite streamlined, tight and even dusty. Ugolaia has a few surprises up its proverbial bottle sleeve in this 8,000-bottle release.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 94 RP

2019 lisini brunello di montalcino Italy Red

he Lisini 2019 Brunello is compelling, starting with its captivating aromas of fragrant blue flower, hay, perfumed berry, dark exotic spice, new leather and aromatic herb. It’s also delicious, delivering a great depth of flavors including juicy Morello cherry, raspberry croissant, licorice and crushed mint before a blood orange close. A backbone of velvety tannins provides seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it vibrant and balanced. What a gorgeous wine and the best Brunello I’ve had so far from this historic estate. Drink 2028–2039. Abv: 14.5% Kerin O’Keefe | 98 KOMedicinal blackberries, sweet sage, stone dust and candied oranges define the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino. This is juicy and vibrant with violet and lavender-tinged wild berry fruits and chalky mineral tones that form a saturation of minerality toward the close. A web of fine-grained tannins resonates as the 2019 finishes long and staining yet feels only lightly structured. Salted licorice suggestions linger on. This is a classy southern Montalcino Brunello from Lisini.Vinous Media | 94 VMA sleek and structured red with black cherry, cedar and spice aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a chewy finish. Integrated and flexing. Drink after 2027.James Suckling | 94 JSThe Lisini 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a dark and spicy bouquet with prune, cardamom, asphalt and wet stone. The wine is quite developed, and for that reason, I wouldn’t suggest a very long drinking window. There is cola and dried rosemary sprig at the back. This is a dark Brunello with concentrated fruit to drink in the medium term. Production is 40,000 bottles.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 93 RP
