It would be an extreme waste of time to visit Spain and not try a wine (or several) with a heavy representation of Tempranillo. The grape’s name comes from the Spanish word temprano, which means “early.” It earned this name by consistently ripening sooner than most other Spanish varietals. In 2015, Tempranillo took third place on the list of the most widely planted varietals, and 88% of that representation was achieved in Spain, cementing its reputation as their “noble grape.”

Tempranillo is considerably less aromatic than varietals like Pinot Noir or Sangiovese, but this only makes it stand out as an incredibly versatile, neutral option. It sees a ton of use in many blends across the globe and often helps bring the barrel’s signature flavor to the forefront. Every flavor brought by a blend that involves this magical grape gets accentuated and built up, giving these blends an impact that is very hard to match. Still, it holds a unique identity by combining the soft, juicy overtone of strawberries with a delicate, earthy plum baseline.

Spain is, without a doubt, the place to be when it comes to Tempranillo blends. These vintages have demonstrated an excellent aging capacity and will liven up any social event and add a touch of sweet Spanish magic to any meal you choose to pair them with. Tempranillo is a Spanish classic and should find its place in every wine geek’s collection.

Extremely intense aromas of dried lemons, apples, limes and chalk. Full body, wonderful depth of fruit and density with bright acidity and a layered and rich palate. Yet remains vivid and fresh. Sweet, expansive and seamless in texture, offering intense cherry-vanilla, spicecake and rose pastille flavors that deepen slowly as the wine opens up. Fully mature but with plenty of life left in it, this wine finishes impressively long, supple and sweet, displaying discreet tannins, resonating spiciness and suave florality. 2020 sierra de tolono rioja tinto Spain Red

The entry-level red 2020 Sierra de Toloño was produced with Tempranillo from Rivas de Tereso, fresh and energetic, representing the high-altitude vineyards produced in a simple way. It has 13.5% alcohol and a medium body with good freshness, clean berry flavors, vibrant acidity and fine tannins. 35,000 bottles produced, the largest production by far. 2021 artadi rioja vina el pison Spain Red

Reductive at first before deep aromas emerge of mineral, fine herbs, white pepper, oyster shells, hibiscus, freshly chopped blueberries and forest berries. Really dissolved and transparent on the palate with great tension and immaculate tannins. Persistent, mineral-driven finish. Already approachable now but this has impeccable balance, allowing it to age effortlessly. Better give it two years to get rid of the reduction.James Suckling | 100 JSThe 2021 Viña El Pisón had a similar élevage as the other wines, as they do not use the new barrels in the top wines like they used to do in the past; they try to have similar percentage of new barrels in all the wines. This is silky, a little riper and more aromatic than the 2020 and with a very long aftertaste. The wine is not oaky at all; it’s quite fruit-driven, and as usually happens with this wine, it’s quite austere, a little closed and backward. And despite its concentration and power, it doesn’t seem to weigh heavy. Persistent.
