Top Collectible Wines

A person’s wine collection tells a lot about their passion and personality. While not every wine is for everyone, certain bottles simply command respect in a way that goes beyond personal taste. Every bottle is a reflection of the culture that produced it, the people who devoted hours and days, months and years to the art of winemaking, each grape carefully picked and processed when the time is just right. Some blends are so coveted, it takes you a decade to receive your first bottle, and the wait makes the wine that much sweeter. If a wine is worth adding to your collection, it performs astonishingly at any kind of social gathering and will create memories for years to come.

As a result, the market for top-quality wines grows every year. It is more important than ever to secure your spot on big waiting lists, as many brands produce only a small amount of wine annually. With how much wines can vary from year to year, due to the condition in which grapes grow, you don’t want to miss the best vintages. Part of our mission is helping people like you wrap their lips around the juiciest, most elegant blends we can find. While some people are in it for profit, we think the true joy of wine comes from tasting it, and sharing it with your closest friends, family, and loved ones. The sheer emotion that goes into winemaking rubs off on the person imbibing it, allowing you to peer through windows across time and space and rekindle your love for nature, and your love for humanity. Let’s explore this land of delicious swirling crimson together.

2019 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is stunning. What a wine! In this vintage, the aromatics are huge and expansive, a theme that comes through on the palate as well. Cedar, tobacco, dried leaves, incense and blood orange all race out of the glass. The 2019 is mind-blowing in its intensity, pedigree and overall balance. It’s the wine of the vintage in Chianti Classico.Vinous Media | 100 VMThe 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto la Casuccia is a wine of intensity, volume and power. Yet it also shows impeccable balance thanks to the deft hands of the estate winemaking team. I find this edition of la Casuccia, with fruit from a steep vineyard that faces the Castello, to be especially full and rich. Fruit weight and concentration is indeed a characteristic of this classic growing season, and this wine wears it well. You are treated to plenty of blackberry, spice, tobacco and grilled herb.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 97 RPCastello di Ama’s vineyards all lie in western Gaiole, where white, limestone-rich alberese soils predominate. La Casuccia includes a bit more clay than Marco Pallanti’s other vineyard sites, and that seems to build broader, richer tannins and intense depth in the dark fruit flavors while maintaining freshness in this warm and dry vintage. The fleshy red fruit from the 20 percent of merlot in the blend marries seamlessly with sangiovese’s leaner frame, giving a wine with juicy dark cherry and raspberry flavors tinged with notes of blood orange and a hint of mint. The wine gains energy for several days, the lively fruit tones and cool salinity lasting through a long and balanced finish.Wine & Spirits Magazine | 97 W&SPacked with succulent flavors of plum, blackberry and black cherry, this broad red is supported by a dense, burly structure that should allow it to evolve nicely over the next two decades. Reveals iron, earth, eucalyptus and tobacco accents on the finish. All the elements are there, this just needs time. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2045. 488 cases made, 50 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 96 WSCool blueberry aromas with purple fruit and an inky highlight. Black licorice as well. Full-bodied with firm and racy tannins that are polished yet structured. Fairly tight and closed right now. It needs time to open and soften with bottle age. Try after 2025.James Suckling | 95 JS

2019 isole e olena cepparello Super Tuscan/IGT

It has a supremely enticing nose.. With the 2019 there is an added precision to the aromas, less heavy oak, and no greenness on the palate. It is concentrated with a rich velvety texture but without any heaviness and with a gentle unforced quality. The tannins are fine and very well integrated, in fact finer and better integrated than even the excellent 2016 vintage. It is of course very young now but it’s almost too delicious not to drink! Supremely graceful, it just gets better and better.TWI | 100 TWIThe 2019 Cepparello has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, as if all of its energy is focused inward. That won’t be an issue in another few years’ time, but for now readers should resist any temptation to open bottles. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous Sangiovese fruit, along with hints of blood orange, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco, all wrapped together by plush, silky contours. The purity of the fruit is just striking. In 2019, Cepparello is more finesse than power. I expect it will age beautifully over the next several decades.Antonio Galloni | 96 AGSo much licorice and fennel seed with black cherry and a hint of tomato paste. Medium body, round texture and savory flavors. Pretty and fresh at the end, with subtle flavors. Drink now or hold.James Suckling | 94 JS

2016 Livio Sassetti Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino

Blackberries, black walnuts and black cherries, as well as loads of chewy tannins. Some smoked wood, wood tannins and even black truffles. It’s full-bodied and powerful with loads going on. It just keeps growing on the palate. So much wet earth and black olive at the finish with porcini mushrooms, too. Needs time to soften. Crazy finish. Try after 2025.James Suckling | 100 JSIf checking in early, make sure to give the towering 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Pertimali plenty of time to stretch its legs. It’s incredibly shy and backward upon first pulling the cork, coming to life nearly an hour later and never taking a step back from there on out. A beguiling display of spiced orange peels, sour cherry and mint pull you closer to the glass, where notes of cardamom, cinnamon, clove and sage reside. It’s dangerously soft and supple at first sip with fleshy red fruits and sweet spices blanketing the palate; yet beneath this soothing mix, a complex web of minerals and fine tannin slowly saturate. That said, there’s a lively bolt of acidity which maintains freshness in spite of the 2016’s heroic structure. Inner florals resonate along with a hint of white pepper, as it tapers off with classic austerity. This is a gorgeous vintage for Pertimali.Vinous Media | 97 VMRed berry, violet and menthol aromas fill the glass alongside a whiff of underbrush in this full-bodied red. The tightly wound palate offers Marasca cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of game set against a backbone of assertive, fine-grained tannins. Flashes of bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink 2024–2036.Wine Enthusiast | 97 WEFrom vines in the historic Montosoli area, in the north, the 2016 exhibits some rusticity with saddle leather, cherry pit, licorice and celery seed. There is concentration on the midpalate with drying tannins, and notes of amaro, and dried orange peel. Classic and savory, the 2016 has a long finish. Drink 2024-2034.Jeb Dunnuck | 95 JDMuddled plum and cherry flavors are enhanced by leather, black tea and iron notes in this sleek yet beefy red. Chewy tannins line the finish, yet this remains lively and finds a nice equilibrium in the end. Best from 2024 through 2047. 4,600 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 94 WSThe Pertimali estate is comprised of a contiguous 16-hectare plot on the hill of Montosoli. With an average altitude of 300 metres on clay and limestone soil, it is entirely planted with indigenous clones of the estate. Livio Sassetti crafts distinctly earthy and savoury Brunello and the 2016 leads with exotic spice notes of paprika and clove weaving through leather and dried berries. Currently austere, the palate is irony with loads of chalky Sangiovese tannins. Finishes with an overall drying sensation. Drinking Window 2024 - 2038.Decanter | 92 DEC

2010 cerbaiona brunello di montalcino Brunello

The 2010 Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino brings the evening to a rapturous finish. The most anticipated wine of the night, the Cerbaiona shows why it belongs in the pantheon of the most epic wines ever made in Montalcino. A Brunello with no beginning and no end, the 2010 Cerbaiona just is. Every aroma, every shade of nuance, every texture is just…perfect. The 2010 has been nothing less than thrilling every time I have tasted it, going back to the days when it was a young wine in cask. It is every bit as magnificent on this night.Vinous Media | 100 VMThe 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is an absolutely distinctive wine and one unlike this producer has ever released. It feels radically different in terms of concentration, intensity and complexity. I was blown away by the beautiful and profound sense of inner harmony on display here. The wine puts on an epic showing of aromas that span from the simple ripe cherry and blackcurrant to the most ethereal tones of balsam herb, root beer and licorice. In between, are hearty aromas of cured tobacco and smoked meat. It really has it all along the entire Sangiovese spectrum. In the mouth, the wine offers similar complexity with thick extraction backed by sweet and sour layers of fruit and tannic structure. If you are looking for outstanding Brunello, look no further. This is one of the top three wines of the vintage.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 98 RPThe 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is serious stuff and one powerhouse of a Brunello. Deep, rich, black fruits, roasted herbs, some smoke meat notes, licorice, and loads of spice take some coaxing at first, yet the wine quickly offers loads of fireworks with aeration. This full-bodied, massively concentrated Brunello has ripe tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and awesome length. Give it a decant if drinking any time soon.Jeb Dunnuck | 97 JD

2010 Renieri Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

A young Brunello with precision and complexity showing violets, blackberries, bramble berries, tea leaf and minerals. Stone undertones, too. Full body, a compressed palate and firm and velvety tannins. Powerful and long. Truly fantastic. Breathtaking. Better in 2018.James Suckling | 100 JSThe 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a magnificent wine that will appeal to those who love the softer and richer side of Brunello. Proprietor Marco Bacci shows a unique talent for interpreting the Sangiovese grape and his deft work comes through clearly in this excellent vintage. This is a powerful, penetrating but elegant wine with dark cherry and blackberry softened by spice, cinnamon and licorice. The wine is tight and focused in terms of mouthfeel, but it also exhibits an expansive and generous personality. It is very young now and requires at least five years of cellar aging before it will really start to flex its muscles.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RPThis is reminiscent of a fine Burgundy, showing berry, fading cherry, spice and chalky mineral notes. Juicy and elegant, firm yet harmonious, this lingers with a long, complex aftertaste. Best from 2018 through 2033. 1,000 cases made, 700 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 96 WSA powerful, explosive wine, Renieri’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is endowed with striking depth. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and menthol notes abound. Racy, resonant and expressive, the Riserva is quite beautiful today. The new oak is a bit evident at this stage, so I would prefer to give the wine another few years in the cellar.Antonio Galloni | 92 AGThe aromas that come together are those of scorched earth, grilled porcini, roasted coffee bean and a bit of burnt rubber. The mature palate offers dried cherry, blackberry confiture, mocha, vanilla and a hint of game alongside tongue-drying tannins that clench the finish. Give this a few years to unfold then drink sooner rather than later.Wine Enthusiast | 90 WE
