Chassagne Montrachet

Chassagne Montrachet Wine

Chassagne-Montrachet wine is a cornerstone of Côte de Beaune, taking the familiar grape varietals Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and propelling them to almost incomprehensible levels of quality and intensity. The soil around this region is absolutely saturated with limestone, but there is also a healthy amount of red gravel which helps Pinot Noir reach its full potential. The dry, warm summers and cold winters define the continental climate that envelops Côte de Beaune, and you can smell the weather in the air, as raw life force surges through the land and sends chills down your spine.

The flavors of Chassagne-Montrachet wines will have you imagining a royal feast, bowls filled to the brim with ripe, succulent apricot, juicy kiwi, while fresh, plushy toast drips with hot butter. The whole experience is given additional depth by the mineral influence of the region’s terroir, an homage to the fine soil that helped produce these masterpieces. Expect to lose sleep as you unravel the mysteries of Chassagne-Montrachet in your mind, slowly and carefully, savoring each sensation to its fullest. Anyone who experiences these wines becomes infatuated almost immediately, as the glass speaks to something primal and emotional within.

Many wine geeks around the world consider these wines a priority for their collection, and for a good reason. If you wish to join their ranks, have a look at our selection, where we’ve isolated the finest work this commune has ever created for your perusal. After tasting one bottle, you will wish to own several dozen more, as these wines are nothing short of stellar. Their refreshing properties make them ideal for warm summer nights with your loved ones.

2018 bernard moreau chassagne montrachet Burgundy White

(Chassagne-Montrachet- Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils) The 2018 Chassagne villages here was all ready for bottling and was just settling in for another month or so prior to its mise. The wine had been assembled at the end of July and fined the last week of October, so it was showing very well in mid-November. The nose is pure and very floral this year, offering up a fine blend of pear, apple, a lovely base of soil, lemon blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and succulent at the core, with a zesty girdle of acidity, lovely focus and grip and impressive backend mineral drive on the complex and beautifully balanced finish. Fine juice. (Drink between 2020-2045).John Gilman | 91 JGThere are fully 125 barrels of the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Village, a lovely wine in the making that reveals aromas of warm bread, citrus oil, fresh peach and dried white flowers. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and nicely concentrated, with fine cut and a well-defined finish. That there’s so much volume this year is great news for Moreau fans.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 89-91 RP(Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Villages White) Discreet wood influence sets off the ripe aromas of various white-fleshed fruit along with hints of matchstick and lemon rind. The rich and relatively full-bodied flavors possess both good detail and punch, all wrapped in a less refined but notably more complex finale. This is a quality Chassagne villages. (Drink starting 2023).Burghound | 89-91 BH

2019 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Caillerets

Here too there is plenty of petrol character to the cool and nicely layered nose of ripe yellow orchard fruit, resin and rosemary oil. The attractively textured, rich and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality while offering outstanding complexity on the sappy, balanced and sneaky long finish. If you allow this to warm up a touch of warmth slowly emerges but it’s a non-issue if the proper serving temperature is maintained.Burghound | 93 BH

Muscular and powerful, the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes wafts from the glass with notes of pear, orange oil, peach, nutmeg and spices. 2020 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes

Smoky aromas include those of essence of pear, lemon-lime and rosemary oil. The utterly delicious and unusually refined middle weight flavors possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel that carries over to the focused, youthfully austere and impeccably well-balanced finale. This beauty is sufficiently tightly wound to repay up to a decade of cellaring yet it’s not so backward as to be unapproachable young if that’s your preference.Burghound | 93 BHVery pale colour, the nose is rather more elegant than the village Chassagne. Picked on the first day. This is beautifully juicy with a classy ripe white fruit and some ripe citrus notes, long finish. Racy and ripe at the same time. 13% alcohol.Jasper Morris | 93 JMAromas of orange oil, pear, beeswax, bread dough and anise introduce the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes, a medium to full-bodied, taut but fleshy wine that’s bright and charming. This is a gourmand but controlled Chenevottes that will offer a broad drinking window.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92 RP

Matured with 20% new oak the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has a high-toned and expressive bouquet with white flowers and a touch of tangerine. The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Village is just missing some definition on the nose at the moment. The palate is better with a judicious touch of reduction on the entry, fine depth with tropical notes furnishing the finish. Fine.Vinous Media | 88-90 VM

2020 Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Boudriottes, Burgundy White

A rich version, featuring peach, apple, lemon curd and baking spice flavors. Almost creamy in texture, with good cut and a lingering, mouthwatering finish of citrus and spices. Drink now through 2029. 75 cases imported.Wine Spectator | 93 WSThis is cooler and not as ripe as either the Morgeot or the Clos St. Jean with more nuanced aromas of red and dark berries, spice and a suggestion of warm earth. The supple and rounded medium weight flavors are not as concentrated as either of the foregoing wines though there is a certain sophistication to the texture that the others lack, all wrapped in a lingering, dusty, youthfully austere and more complex finish that displays an equally discreet touch of warmth. This is lovely and while it’s certainly ripe, it’s not as marked by the excesses of the 2020 vintage. I would note that while this too could be approached on the younger side, it should easily repay up to a decade of keeping. Well worth checking out.Burghound | 92 BH

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Chaumées Clos de la Truffières 1er Cru has a crisp, granite and jasmine-scented bouquet that blossoms nicely with aeration. 2022 Domaine Lamy Pillot Chassagne Montrachet Pot Bois, Burgundy White

The village-level Chassagne Pot Bois from Lamy Pillot is an attractive wine with aromas of lemon peel, green apple, and a suggestion of linden flowers. The texture is fresh and crisp, relatively light in body, with enough substance to create a dynamic balance. It is interesting to compare the versions of Lamy-Pillot and Lamy-Caillat, both produced by Sébastien Caillat. The latter has slightly more smoky reductive notes and a more present salty minerality, while his work at Lamy-Pillot emphasises the purity of the fruit and floral notes. Both are delicious wines; the former is also a superb value.Decanter | 95 DECThe 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Pot Bois derives from younger vines than those that produce the communal Chassagne-Montrachet bottling from Domaine Lamy-Caillat (which hails from the same high-quality hillside lieu-dit), but the terroir leaves the same imprint on this chiseled, electric wine. Offering up aromas of minty apple, pear, white flowers and freshly baked bread, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, concluding with a saline finish.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92 RPClear fresh colour, with an energetic limestone nose, huge energy to this, stricter than the regular, I think horses for courses rather than one better than the other. Interesting finish though, with minerals and fresh plums together. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted: October 2023.Jasper Morris | 91-93 JM

2022 Domaine Lamy Pillot Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot

The white Morgeot from Lamy-Pillot is blended from three lieux-dits: Petit Clos, which is in the majority; Fairendes, just to the north; and Champs Jeandreau down the slope from La Boudriotte. Interestingly, it seems there is more vivacity than in the white from Clos Saint-Jean. Citrus and ripe pear dominate the aromas with a hint of spice and white flowers. The texture has more freshness and just a hint of reduction. From all indications, this is a wine that should age well.Decanter | 96 DECGently reductive aromas of sweet orchard fruit, white flowers and pastry cream preface the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered palate that’s fine-boned, vibrant and charming. It’s a blend of lieux-dits Petit Clos, Fairendes and Champs Jendreau.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92 RPMade mostly from the upper slopes of Morgeot: Petit Clos and Fairendes, along with a bit of Champ Jeandreau. Clear light colour. The nose suggests weight but no detail of fruit. On the palate, there is a fine wealth of concentrated white fruit, more than just apples in this orchard, which dominates. There is plenty in reserve to make a real vin de garde. This is a keeper that will be worth waiting for. A lovely little touch of acidity to finish. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted: October 2023.Jasper Morris | 92-95 JMThe 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru has a tightly wound, stony bouquet, focused and linear, with touches of sea spray and Crustacea emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with fine poise and depth. Bound together with a silver thread of acidity, this gently gambols to a lightly spiced, almost peppery finish. Delightful.Vinous Media | 91-93 VM

Fresh clear pale colour. The nose has less character than my favourites in the line-up. Takes a little time, then more emerges.
