Chassagne Montrachet Wine

Chassagne-Montrachet wine is a cornerstone of Côte de Beaune, taking the familiar grape varietals Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and propelling them to almost incomprehensible levels of quality and intensity. The soil around this region is absolutely saturated with limestone, but there is also a healthy amount of red gravel which helps Pinot Noir reach its full potential. The dry, warm summers and cold winters define the continental climate that envelops Côte de Beaune, and you can smell the weather in the air, as raw life force surges through the land and sends chills down your spine.

The flavors of Chassagne-Montrachet wines will have you imagining a royal feast, bowls filled to the brim with ripe, succulent apricot, juicy kiwi, while fresh, plushy toast drips with hot butter. The whole experience is given additional depth by the mineral influence of the region’s terroir, an homage to the fine soil that helped produce these masterpieces. Expect to lose sleep as you unravel the mysteries of Chassagne-Montrachet in your mind, slowly and carefully, savoring each sensation to its fullest. Anyone who experiences these wines becomes infatuated almost immediately, as the glass speaks to something primal and emotional within.

Many wine geeks around the world consider these wines a priority for their collection, and for a good reason. If you wish to join their ranks, have a look at our selection, where we’ve isolated the finest work this commune has ever created for your perusal. After tasting one bottle, you will wish to own several dozen more, as these wines are nothing short of stellar. 2022 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes

Bottled in late July. Pale lemon colour. A pure and fresh bouquet, mostly white fruit. Particularly stony this year behind a raft of white apple fruit, plenty of energy, starting to soften at the back. Middleweight plus, quite attractive. Tasted Oct 2023.Jasper Morris | 92 JM

2022 Guy Amiot et Fils Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers, Burgundy White

A more moderate dollop of wood can be found on the smoky aromas of petrol, rosemary oil and a variety of white fleshed fruit. The finer, though not nearly as concentrated, medium weight flavors display excellent power on the focused, balanced and saliva-inducing finale. This is more classic in style than any of the foregoing 1ers and a wine that should repay mid-term keeping.Burghound | 90-92 BH

2022 Jean Noel Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chaumees, Burgundy White

Here too there is subtle if perceptible wood framing the ripe citrus confit and white orchard fruit-scented nose. The delicious and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel while exuding a bead of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the balanced, firmer and slightly longer finale. Lovely and understated in style.Burghound | 91 BHBottled in early August. Clear colour, a softer white fruit here, open and delicious. Seems more generous but less precise compared to Chenevottes but there is certainly plenty of wine here. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Oct 2023.Jasper Morris | 91 JM

2022 Domaine Fernand et Laurent Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, Burgundy White

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse shows considerable promise, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear and orange oil mingled with notes of white flowers, mint and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and structured, with lively acids, chalky grip and a resonant finish, it will only be bottled after a second winter on the lees.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 92-94 RPLike the Vergers, the wood treatment is prominent but not invasive as it permits the ripe and again vaguely exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, passion fruit and citrus confit to be appreciated. The wood also appears on the caressing and plush medium weight plus flavors that are also blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that coats the palate on the powerful and serious but well-balanced and refreshing finale. While this could be approached young, I would advise holding it for at least a few years first so that the wood treatment can more completely integrate.Burghound | 92 BHPale lemon. Powerful character. Stands up like a limestone menhir. Too concentrated to see all the detail yet, with also a little salinity. Mostly white fruit but with some riper yellow tints to it. Clean at the finish, not too oaky, and of course persistent. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Oct 2023.Jasper Morris | 92-94 JM

2022 Marchand-Tawse Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot, Burgundy White

Racked to tank. A glowing pale primrose. Not very much reduction. Good weight, a light lemon acidity behind a fine depth of concentrated fruit. With time I think more personality will emerge. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Dec 2023.Jasper Morris | 91-94 JM
