Gaja Wines

"Gaja's winery provides magnificent Barbaresco wine with amazing consistency, and the wines evolve with age like a caterpillar turning into a gorgeous butterfly. Their wines are often chewy, fleshy, visceral in a way very few other wineries can boast. The flavors are concentrated, and the wine seems to almost pulsate with pure life force in the glass. Expect to encounter jammy dark fruits, delicious grilled vegetables, and other aromas that make it seem like you’re eating a full-course meal prepared by one of the world’s finest chefs. It’s a complete package in every way imaginable, and a wine that will remain in your memories for decades to come. If you’re at a social event, don’t expect a bottle of Gaja to still contain wine after about ten minutes! "

2021 Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey, Italy White

Always a fantastic chardonnay with apple pie, nougat, vanilla, and flint aromas and flavors. Hints of salted caramel. Medium to full body with racy acidity and bright fruit. Complex and lively. Tight and reserved at the end. Needs time to open. Try after 2024.James Suckling | 96 JSThe 2021 Gaia & Rey (Chardonnay) is bright and beautifully textured. Lemon confit, marzipan, spice and a kick of French oak all meld together effortlessly. The 2021 needs time in bottle to fully open, but it is quite attractive. Vineyard sources remain sites in Treiso and Serralunga.Vinous Media | 93 VMA barrel sample, the 2021 Gaia & Rey is fresh with mineral lift, flinty reduction, and tropical aromatics of ripe peach, wildflowers, elegant wood spice, and pineapple. It is medium to full-bodied and balanced, with vibrant acidity and a rounded mid-palate. An energetic white with wonderful concentration and good length, there is a singularity to this wine that is hard to replicate. Produced from two vineyards and raised in Stockinger barrels followed by 10% new oak, it will be released in June 2023.Jeb Dunnuck | 92-94 JD

2021 Gaja Barbaresco, Italy Red

A brightly jeweled ruby hue, the 2021 Barbaresco is super-expressive, with loads of wild raspberries that leap from the glass along with notes of strawberries, pressed roses, fresh orange, and violet. As it opens, it evens picks up some spice box, cigar incense, and cherry notes. Crystalline in nature and ripe, this next-level red delivers ripe, sweet tannins, great tension, and fresh, vibrant acidity, without any austerity. A luxury racecar, it’s fantastic and possibly the wine of the year. Drink 2025-2055.Jeb Dunnuck | 97 JDThe 2021 classic Barbaresco from Gaja is drop-dead gorgeous. Made with 14 estate vineyards that are vinified separately before being assembled into the final blend, it’s all about finesse, delivering sensations of juicy raspberry, red cherry, cinnamon, camphor and white pepper before a long, star anise and saline mineral close. Taut, refined tannins and bright acidity provide the age-worthy structure. Drink 2027–2036. Abv: 14% Kerin O’Keefe | 97 KO
