Gewurztraminer Wines

My, my, what a beautiful specimen. Just looking at a healthy growth of Gewürztraminer grapes is enough to make your mouth water, and the wines are even more appetizing. Despite typically preferring cooler climates, this grape is grown in a wide variety of regions, including (but not limited to) Argentina, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Chile, and Turkey. While its name may lead you to believe that this grape was created in Germany, it actually draws roots from Alsace in France.

Comparisons have been drawn in the past between Gewürztraminer wines and Moscato blends. However, Gewürztraminer wines tend to demand a slower drinking process, thanks to their lower acidity and higher alcohol content, along with stronger, bigger flavors. The slower you go, the more you can get to know each note in this orchestral masterpiece. From the initial waft of sweet, sensuous rose or lychee, to the sudden impact of juicy grapefruit and pineapple, to the thick, oozing honey and sharp cinnamon, a wine like this is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Because of this flavor variety, we recommend sampling as many proven bottles as you can wrap your lips around. A bottle from Alsace can make anyone develop a taste in glorious white wine, but don’t overlook other regions. Gewürztraminer wines can compete with the heaviest hitters in the world of opulent whites, and are a must-have for seasoned aficionados and freshly hooked enthusiasts alike. Serve them fridge cold for the most refreshing experience, and enjoy a warm afternoon with your friends and family.

2015 albert boxler gewurztraminer grand cru brand Alsace White

The citrus-colorerd 2015 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Brand offers a rich and intense, but precise and fresh, truly exciting nose. Tight and intense, this is a full-bodied, pure and mineral Gewurz with good freshness, lemon piquancy and fine tannin structure. It is rich and lush but also stunningly pure, finessed and full of tension—thanks to remarkable acidity for Gewurz from this spectacular vintage.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 95 RPVivid dark yellow. Ripe apricot and guava aromas and flavors, complemented by cinnamon and nutmeg. Enters bright and juicy, then becomes more tactile and a tad warm in the middle and on the finish, but boasts lovely precision to the orchard fruit and spicy flavors. Closes long and rich. Just like the 2014 Brand Gewürz from Boxler, this is less showy and in-your-face than Boxler’s Gewürz Reserve of the same year, but is always the deeper and more refined wine. This 2015 is a beautiful wine that is head and shoulders above the 2014. These vines are all in the Kirchthal right next to Boxler’s Pinot Gris vines, on very rich soils that are not likely to suffer water stress.Vinous Media | 94+ VM

2017 pierre sparr mambourg gewurztraminer Alsace White

Alexandra Boudrot made this wine from a 6.18-acre parcel at Mambourg, a grand cru on the south face of Mount Sigolsheim. It has the clean balance of a vintage without extremes, a sweet adolescent beauty delivered in high-toned spice and meadow-flower scents. There’s underlying toasty richness, but the main element is a freshness that can carry off that glistening impression of sweetness. Decant it for chawanmushi (a delicate, savory Japanese custard) or serve it with a bacon-and-onion quiche.Wine and Spirits Mag | 94 W&SA concentrated nose of Damask rose and juicy peach makes for a heady opening on this wine. A hint of grapefruit-peel spice plays on the juicy, medium-sweet palate. Along with citrus freshness, this creates a lovely balance of richness and freshness.Wine Enthusiast | 90 WE

2018 albert boxler gewurztraminer France White

Lithe and vibrant, this finely-balanced Gewürztraminer glides across the palate with a lovely range of lychee, peach skin, jasmine and passion fruit coulis flavors. The well-cut, mineral-laced finish lingers, echoing the ripe fruit and spice notes. Drink now through 2028.Wine Spectator | 93 WSAromas of candlewax and lychee arise from the glass. On the palate, they’re met with luscious sweetness and racy (but not quite searing) acidity, as well as some cooked apple and nutmeg notes. Though a hair more acid would have been a welcome refreshment, this wine’s weighty, velvety texture and long finish are lovely.Wine Enthusiast | 92 WE

2020 albert boxler gewurztraminer grand cru brand France White

The 2020 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Brand offers an intense and concentrated bouquet with candied lemon and lychee aromas intertwined with notes of crushed stones and lemon peels. Lush and piquant on the palate, with great intensity and beautiful bitters reminiscent of bitter oranges and kumquat on the finish, this is a rich, tensioned and vital Gewürz that belongs to the best I have had from granite soils. This is like a Sporen from granite soils. Stunning acidity here. This is nervous, vibrantly fresh and crystalline. Fabulous! Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.Robert Parker Wine Advocate | 96 RP
