Haut Medoc Wines

Ever since the 17th century, the Haut-Médoc appellation has been dominating the viticultural landscape of the world. It is one of the most prosperous and recognizable subregions of Bordeaux, in no small part thanks to the fact that it encompasses other amazing appellations such as Margaux or Pauillac, which produce most of its wine. It’s located on the left bank of the Gironde, where the climate and soil create grapes that stand above most other places in the world.

A layer of coarse gravel comfortably sits on top of a bed of clay, providing the ideal conditions for the growth of beautiful, rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The more inland you go, the more clay deposits you encounter, which explains the appearance and thriving success of local Merlot. The wines that set this region apart are complex in their aromatic structure, with notes of currant, blackberry, licorice, and an underlying oaken base, with subtle hints of mint and spices. It tastes like getting lost in the forest, and the flavor is incredibly powerful and generous.

Haut-Médoc typically have great aging potential, and are able to sit in your cellar for up to 30 years in some cases, developing character as they witness the stories of your household unfurl like a glass of crisp red wine in your glass. This makes them excellent for collectors, but also an ace up your sleeve if you wish to quickly set a great atmosphere at a party. Absolutely essential.

2003 la lagune Bordeaux Red

A rich and ripe nose of dried fruits, figs and spices with hints of cedar. Full body, a juicy fruit character and soft tannins. Lots of pretty fruit. Lightly earthy tobacco undertones. Still fresh. Gorgeous now to drink.James Suckling | 93 JSThe 2003 La Lagune was the first vintage whereby Denis Dubourdieu acted as consultant. It has a more fruit forward bouquet compared to the 2002 and it has aged well, offering redcurrant, dried fig and a touch of tinned prune on the nose, yet without the VA or sur-maturité that afflict other 2003s. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery opening, fine tannin, admirable freshness for this vintage with more tension on the finish than one might expect, plus I appreciate the discrete touch of bay leaf and white pepper on the aftertaste. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.Vinous Media | 90 VMA big chunky wine which still has grace and elegance along with the power. This is an excellent performance from a property which is worth watching.Wine Enthusiast | 90 WE

2009 Belgrave

This is fairly tight and buttoned down, and the inflexibility of the tannins dampens the expression of the fruit. It's good quality, no question, and the cassis fruit has a ripeness to it once it opens up, but it ends a little abruptly and isn't showing the generosity of the vintage. Recent vintages of this property have seen a big step up in quality and I'm certain that this wine on its own with some food would be a delicious 2009, but it doesn't stand up in the lineup today. Drinking Window 2019 - 2032.Decanter | 90 DECA wine with sliced-plum and lemon character and hints of lemon grass on the nose and palate. Medium to full body with fresh acidity and a clean finish. Try after 2016.James Suckling | 90 JSThe 2009 Belgrave has a ripe red cherry, kirsch scented bouquet with hints of raisin and fig. It is just flirting with over-ripeness...but not over-ripe! The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit, a little chewy in texture and perhaps needing more mineralité on the finish. Yet, there is fine density and decent precision on the finish. Maybe give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting.Vinous Media | 90 VMA wine with luscious red fruits and bold acidity, The dense texture adds to the firm, solid tannins. This is a wine that offers both short-term attraction and long-term aging. Wine Enthusiast | 90 WEShows the ripeness of the vintage, featuring sleek linzer torte and plum confiture flavors laced with mouthwatering spice and sweet tobacco notes. This has well-integrated toast and a very racy finish. Drink now through 2015. 18,100 cases made. Wine Spectator | 90 WS
