Haut Medoc Wines

Ever since the 17th century, the Haut-Médoc appellation has been dominating the viticultural landscape of the world. It is one of the most prosperous and recognizable subregions of Bordeaux, in no small part thanks to the fact that it encompasses other amazing appellations such as Margaux or Pauillac, which produce most of its wine. It’s located on the left bank of the Gironde, where the climate and soil create grapes that stand above most other places in the world.

A layer of coarse gravel comfortably sits on top of a bed of clay, providing the ideal conditions for the growth of beautiful, rich Cabernet Sauvignon. The more inland you go, the more clay deposits you encounter, which explains the appearance and thriving success of local Merlot. The wines that set this region apart are complex in their aromatic structure, with notes of currant, blackberry, licorice, and an underlying oaken base, with subtle hints of mint and spices. It tastes like getting lost in the forest, and the flavor is incredibly powerful and generous.

Haut-Médoc typically have great aging potential, and are able to sit in your cellar for up to 30 years in some cases, developing character as they witness the stories of your household unfurl like a glass of crisp red wine in your glass. This makes them excellent for collectors, but also an ace up your sleeve if you wish to quickly set a great atmosphere at a party. Absolutely essential.

2014 cantemerle Bordeaux Red

I like the floral character, which highlights the aromas of currants and berries. Full body and a firm and tight center palate. Silky tannins and a savory and creamy-textured finish. A beautifully balanced red. Try in 2021, but it’s already gorgeous to taste.James Suckling | 94 JSA wine of notable precision, persistence and class, the 2014 Cantemerle is outstanding. Sweet tobacco, licorice, red cherry and dried savory herbs are some of the signatures. Medium in body and lively, the 2014 captures the best attributes of the year. This is a positively stellar showing.Antonio Galloni | 92 AGWhile the wine does have a strongly dry element, it also has a creamy, black currant background that shows promise for the future. With great acidity offering freshness, this wine will balance well.Wine Enthusiast | 92 WEBright and racy, with red currant and plum fruit lined with a lively tang of iron that streaks through the finish. A touch taut, but should unwind nicely with modest cellaring. Best from 2018 through 2024. 33,335 cases made.Wine Spectator | 90 WS
